Scotstown Notes

Junior Championship: In a dramatic game of football, Scotstown and Killanny have to do it all over again in this R1A of the Junior Championship. Scotstown made the perfect start to this championship match going 1-5 to 1pt up with 16mins gone in the match. Sean Mohan goal came in the 10th minute, however great first half points through Elliott Maguire, Paul Sherlock, Sean Mohan, Emmett McCrudden, Adrian Carbin & James Hamill gave Scotstown a strong first half performance, were we contested the high ball with good effect through Michael Mc Carville, Conor Caulfield & James Hamill and the strength of Donnacha Dolan in the full forward helped to create scores, while we led at the break by 1-7 to 4pts. It was a blistering start to the 2nd half, Paul Sherlock point, followed by an Elliott Maguire goal and a 35th minute point from Sean Mohan made the score 2-9 to 5pts. The remaining 25mins of the second half was all Killanny and their introduction of Andy Callan got them back into the game and soon the sides were level by the 51st minute. KIllanny went two in front in the closing stages and tried to increase this, only for an important interception from Jack McDevitt and his resulting clearance got Scotstown a free at the other end which Michael Mc Carville slotted over. Another pointed free from Sean Mohan ended the match all square. Scotstown led at the break by 2-5 to 8pts, first half goals from Kieran Hughes and Shane Carey carried them through with a 3pt advantage at half time. Our third goal at the early stages of the 2nd half through Nicholas Corrigan kept Scotstown at bay, while Magheracloone were piling on the pressure & Scotstown having the unfortunate of being reduced to 14 players in the early stages of 2nd half, they had to sustain Magheracloone fight back but in the end our seniors held on for a good win. U14DIV 1: This Thursday (5th June) our U14 DIV 1 side are in round 6 of the league away to Truagh at 7.30pm. Then on Thursday 12th June they are at home to Aughnamullen.

Mau Hanratty Golf Day – This Friday the 6th of June, sees the Faughs hold the second Mau Hanratty Golf Day. This event marks the memory of one of the Faughs greats and Castleblayney Golf Club favourites Maurice “Mau” Hanratty. The singles stableford event will no doubt be a full timesheet from early morning until late evening as all Golfers aim to win the Mau Hanratty Cup, which is kindly sponsored by the Hanratty family. Last August, a fellow Muckno Street native, Michael McHugh Junior coasted home with a great score, to be the first winner of the event and last year this proved to be one of the great events in both the Castleblayney GAA and Golf worlds. This year will be no different. Tee reservations are limited but for those of you who would like a time for the Mau Hanratty Gold Day please try www.concrawood.ie or contact the Golf Club office at Concra Wood on 042 9749485 Seniors –The Senior team continued their recent good run of form, with a hard earned one point win over Monaghan Harps last Saturday evening. The Faughs opened well with a good score from Aaron McNamara before the Harps replied with a couple of points. Mark Hanratty proved a good target man and the Blayney forwards used him well to keep the score board ticking over. Conor Goran scored a goal coming close to half time but the Faughs advantage quickly disappeared when Dean Fanning netted for the Harps. At Half time the Faughs led by a point 1-6 to 1-5. The early part of the second half saw the Harps in the ascendancy as they opened a three point gap only for Dermot Malone to score an opportunistic goal at the other end. The Faughs then started to play some of their best football with some lovely scores from Malone followed by Patrick Tavey edging the Green and Gold boys into a lead that they didn’t surrender. Best on the night for the Senior team were Brian McGuigan, Barry Hanratty, Mark Treanor and Mark Hanratty. Final Score Harps 1-12 Faughs 2-10. Our next game is a home game against Truagh on the Sunday 21st of June with a throw in time of 7pm. The reserve team – The lads have a home game this Wednesday against Tyholland at 8pm, before thy play in the next round of the O’Duffy Cup Championship against neighbours Cremartin, Saturday 7th June, St. Marys Park, throw in 7pm. Under 14 Boys – Saturday saw the Boys play a top of the table clash against Ballybay in St. Marys Park, the first quarter proved a tight affair with the young Faughs lads going in four points up. A very strong second quarter saw the Blayney lads add another four goals and five points to their tally, which give them a good lead which they never looked like surrendering. This was a much improved display from the Boys with good performance from every player on the panel. Final Score 7-18 Ballybay 1-9. This Thursday night see the team start in the Championship with a home game against Latton at 7.30pm. Can we ask as many supporters to come out and cheer on the team as this will be the lads first experience of playing in the Championship . Under 14 Girls – The girls travelled to Eire Og on Monday evening. After a shaky start the girls settled well and produced some good football, and with a couple of minutes to go the girls were right in the match but Eire Og just managed to get those couple of vital scores to run out winners. Final Score Eire Og 3-16 Faughs 3-10. Best on the day for the Faughs were Rachel Cannon in Goals, Aoibhean Fitzsimons, Shaunine Rice and Janine Mc Bennett. Next game is away fixture versus Killeevan next Monday evening at 7pm. Under 12 Boys– Both teams will have a game this Saturday, we are awaiting fixtures for the upcoming league, the Senior team will play in Division 1 with Carrick, Donaghmoyne , Emyvale, Monaghan Harps and Inniskeen, while the development team will play in Division 3 with Carrick, Latton , Killeavin and Aghabog providing the opposition . Under 8 – The Boys have a match against Clontibret Under 8’s this Saturday morning in St Marys Park, with throw in time of 10am. Can we ask that all players are in the dressing rooms at 9.30am. Parents please feel free to come along at cheer on the boys, they love to see their Mams, Dads, brother and sisters at the games. Juvenile Training – Parents please note that training on a Thursday night for the Under 10, Under 8 and Under 6 moves to St. Marys Park from this Thursday, same time as normal. Can we also ask the parents to mark in Saturday morning from 10 to 11.15am for training for the Under 8 and Under 10’s right throughout the summer. Car Wash – The Minor team have a car wash this Saturday morning, the 7th June, the funds raised are to help with team expenditure, word has it that the lads have been practicing for weeks getting Big Jazza’s car gleaming. Please support the car wash which will open at 10am on Saturday morning and run to 3pm on Saturday afternoon in St. Mary’s Park. The Big Breakfast – The Club will hold a breakfast morning on Sunday the 15th of June in Iontas between 9am and 12pm, it’s an ideal opportunity for all Monaghan supporters to get an Ulster Fry before Monaghan play in the Ulster Championship in Clones at 2pm. The Breakfast is great value at €8 per person and we encourage as many of you to come along for a good social morning. Lotto – There was no winner of this week’s lotto jackpot. Seniors: Clones welcomed Donaghmoyne to St Tiarnach’s Park on Saturday evening last.After a disappointing result against Corduff last time out,the home side were hoping to get back to winning ways.This was the reverse of the first game of the league where Donaghmoyne had comprehensively defeated us. Saturday produced a very entertaining game with plenty of passion and determination on display from both sides.The conditions were perfect and the first half was an even enough affair until Donaghmoyne fired three goals between the 18th and 21st minutes to leave the home side reeling and behind by six points at the break.Clones showed their character in the second half, demonstrating the ability in the panel, to dominate proceedings. The margin was reduced to one point, but with Clones increasing the pressure on the Donaghmoyne defence the final whistle sounded on a scoreline of Clones 0-15 Donaghmoyne 3-07. Despite ending in defeat,this was an encouraging performance from Clones. With half of the league programme completed we find ourselves very much in contention for the play-off positions in this extremely competitive division.There is very little between any of the teams and there are sure to be many more interesting games ahead as we battle for those all-important league points. Next match is away to Cremartin on Saturday 21st June at 7pm. U-16s: There’s a break for both teams now until the end of June with exams and we wish all our players the very best in their exams. U14’s: Played Rockcorry last Saturday going down narrowly by two points. Div4 team are away to Toome in round 7 of the league on Thursday the 19th of June, Big Game: 15th of June sees Clones host the USFC clash of Monaghan and Tyrone, volunteers will be needed for this game and you’re asked to contact the Secretary, Chairman and Tom Kelly. Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Our senior team played Cremartin last Saturday 31st May and it was very evident that a number of players were not at their best and I think a fairly simplistic description would be that it definitely was not one of our finest hours! To be honest we never really got into the game and I think it’s a fair and balanced comment to say that it was a disappointing performance from the team who looked a pale shadow of a side that we all know. When it came down to the real fight, Cremartin wanted it more. They were the better side on the night and showed a lot more hunger, they were faster, fitter and showed more desire for the win and they secured the victory on a final score-line Rockcorry 0-7 to Cremartin 0-16. The bottom line now is that we need to pick ourselves up and get fitter and stronger for the next round of league matches because there is still plenty to play for. Looking at the league table, it’s going to take a lot of hard work, loads of commitment, plenty of sacrifices and will take leaders to lift the confidence levels within the camp. Remember lads, just because something isn’t happening for you right now doesn’t mean that it will never happen. Think positive, be positive and positive things will happen. Heads up, believe in yourself and your team mates and all I can say is keep on trying. A full match report and a selection of action photographs can be viewed at www.rockcorrygaa.ie. Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Fixtures It is either a feast or famine with fixtures and the next couple of weeks fits into the latter category with no games scheduled, which should give the lads ample time to get their injuries sorted! Please note that the closed holiday period is from Wednesday 23rd June to Monday 7th July inclusive, where no fixtures will be scheduled. Under 12 Summer League The under 12 summer league commences this Saturday 7th June and we have been placed in division 2B alongside Ballybay, Clontibret, Corduff, Donaghmoyne B, Doohamlet, Eire Og and Oram. At the time of going to press there was no official fixtures so please keep an eye out on our social media outlets and the SMS text service. Under 14 League Our under 14 footballers travelled to Killeevan, on Saturday 31st May, to play St. Tiarnach Sarsfields in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg division 4 league campaign and were forced to dig very deep in this highly exciting and thrilling encounter. Despite a slight hiccup in the second quarter all players played their part in providing a top-class entertaining match that ended with a deserved win. The game was played in glorious sunshine on a perfect sod and we started the match brightly with all guns blazing and raced into an early 1-7 to 0-0 lead. With such a comfortable lead the lads appeared to take their foot of the pedal which allowed St. Tiarnach Sarsfields to get to grips with the game and they took their scoring opportunities and when the whistle blew after the first fifteen minutes the score-board showed 1-2 to 1-7. We struggled to make an impression during the second period as St. Tiarnach Sarsfields began the second half on the front foot and totally dominated proceedings playing impressive football and notched over some remarkable scores and quickly overturned a five point deficit into a six point advantage leading 4-6 to 1-9. I imagine there was quite a strong pep talk during the interval because all through the third quarter we grabbed a hold of the game and after an absorbing period we held a three point advantage going into the final quarter as the score-board showed St. Tiarnach Sarsfields 4-8 Rockcorry 3-14. The final period was an epic ding-dong battle from start to finish with very little separating the sides in what was a terrific contest. Thankfully, the lads remained strong-willed and worked extremely hard for each other and got their noses in front when it counted to emerge with the spoils on a final score-line St. Tiarnach Sarsfields 6-10 Rockcorry 5-17. Their next outing for the under 14 team in the league campaign is on Thursday 19th June when they host Oram at 7.30pm. Under 14 Championship The next outing for the under 14 footballers is on Thursday 5th June when they play Aghabog in the championship. The game is fixed for Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 7.30pm. Good luck lads. Under 16 Fixtures With examinations taking centre stage for the next couple of weeks the under 16 competition will now take a break to allow players concentrate and prepare for their exams. The next game is scheduled for Thursday 26th June when they travel to play Scotstown. Go Games Blitz The next round of Go Games Blitzs is scheduled for Saturday 14th June when the under 10 footballers will take part in an All-County blitz which takes place at the Monaghan GAA training grounds located at Cloghan, Annyalla. It starts at 9.30am and goes on to 11.30am. The under 8 players will be in action the week after, Saturday 21st June, and they too will travel to Cloghan for an All-County blitz and the same times apply.
