Intermediate Championship
What a day and what a victory we had over Monaghan Harps in Inniskeen last Sunday to reach our first Intermediate Championship Final in 30 years. It was a 3-point margin of victory in the end, but it was certainly a game that was very much in the balance the whole way through. Harps were out of the blocks quicker and were two points up inside the first 7 minutes. An Eddie Walsh free pulled one back for us but Harps responded again with another from play. Mark Grimes converted in the 13th minute only for Harps to again cancel this out before Stephen McMahon popped up to narrow the gap to the minimum once more. Eddie Walsh found some space on the right wing to level matters on 18 mins but another score from play from the Harps edged them ahead again after 21 mins. We hit a 5-minute purple patch then with the elusive Danny Leegan, winning possession just inside the ’21, managing to evade a couple of tackles from the Harps defenders and fire an unstoppable shot to the back of the Harps net. Eddie Walsh then followed this up with two more points one from a free and another fisting over from a tight angle. Harps were not for lying down though and managed to pull two points back before the break to send us in 1-06 to 0-07 up. The second half began with a bang from Monaghan Harps as they hit three good scores all from play within the first 3 minutes of the half to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and regain the lead. But credit where credit’s due, our lads did not panic and started to pick off some good scores to wrestle back the lead. Firstly, Eddie Walsh won and converted a close range free to level things again before following this up with one from play. Then Mark Grimes, who was putting in a great shift up front, found time and space to convert and edge us in front once more. Harps knew they were in a battle and were committing more and more bodies to their attack and this was leaving spaces in their defence which we duly capitalised on in the 40th minute when a turnover was won in the middle and the ball shipped into Danny Leegan who raced in behind the Harps defence only to be hauled down in the box by the last defender and a penalty awarded. As the Harps corner back had made his way off for the black card,
Eddie Walsh duly dispatched the kick with aplomb and suddenly our lead was out to five. Harps responded right away though with a score from play but this was cancelled out by an Eddie Walsh effort. Another good turnover inside the Harps ’45 saw us win another free which Eddie slotted over. Harps again responded with another point but time was running out for them – they managed two more scores in the dying moments of the game but the goal they needed was not going to be given up by a resolute Killanny defence on this occasion and we ran out 3-point victors on a scoreline of 2-11 to 0-14. A great display by all and we now look forward to a Championship Final match against neighbours Carrick Emmetts back in Inniskeen on Sunday 29th October at 2.30pm.
