Clontibret  loose out to Castletara in Ulster Final

For the first time ever for a Monaghan team, Clontibret took part in the Bridie Mc. Meniman Ulster Club Final ,Shield Competition  in Tattyreagh, Co. Tyrone on Sunday last in what could be described as perfect  weather conditions. The Cup was named after Bridie Mc  Meniman who was a stalwart with the Tattreagh club for a long number of years and it was fitting that the Final was played in her home grounds.

Clontibret were quick to open the score when Eleanor Mc. Quaid got the first point of the match, this was followed  shortly afterwards with a goal from Castletara’s Majella Prior. With tight competition from both sides Clontibret  lay claim to two further points from Michelle Morgan and Marie Greenan  It seemed that Clontibret seemed to have the edge when Mairead McCabe sent a good pass into Ann-Marie Larkin to bring a second goal for Castletara in the  15 minute of play.

Clontibret wasted a lot of scoring chances but Michelle Morgan still managed to score two more  points, closely followed by points apiece from Karen Boyle and Marie Greenan. Clontibret’s Tara Mc. Elvanney came on in place of Rosita Finnegan and Karen Boyle moved to goals.

Brid Boylan for Castletara was to land the third goal into the net to widen the gap between the two teams, and a further goal from Aileen Smith left the half time score: Castletara. 4 – 0   Clontibret 0-7.

Substitutions were made on the Castletara side where Aileen Smith came on for Karen Treanor and Grainne Smith for Hazel O’Connor.

The second half started with even more tenacity from both sides, with  Clontibret’s Marie Greenan getting a quick point closely followed by a goal from Donna Moen to close down the gap.  Pressure was being put on Castletara and they were successful in getting two further points with Prior scoring from frees.  Again, the Clontibret girls retaliated with two further points from Marie Greenan.

Still fighting the corner, Anne-Marie Larkin scored into the back of the net, and a further goal came from Grainne Smith, to edge Castletara in front once again,  not to be outdone   Clontibret’s Eleanor Mc. Quaid finished the scoring for Clontibret with a last ditch goal however a little too late, danger woman Brid Boylan ended with a further point.

Final score Castletara 6-3.  Contibret 2-10.
