ROCKCORRY G.A.A.

CLUB NOTES

23rd August 2011

CCTV Cameras

First of all, due to a number of acts of petty vandalism we have decided to take the unfortunate steps to install CCTV cameras and equipment throughout our premises. These cameras have been installed to cover all our property and it is hoped that this measure will help deter the people responsible for carrying out these mindless acts of vandalism.

McGuigan Builders Intermediate Championship

Isn’t it amazing how your mood often reflects the outcome of games! Take last Sunday afternoon for example; we had beautiful sunshine, loads of wonderful scores plus the end result was thankfully the right result which all amounts to one hell of a feel good factor. Did you feel it? Well, I imagine most of our supporters who travelled to Tyholland last Sunday for our round 2 qualifier clash against Eire Og certainly left the grounds feeeeeeeeeeling good! Because they watched our senior team put aside the disappointing episode against Currin, a fortnight ago, to put in a powerful performance and return to winning ways with an impressive and at times a comfortable 0-15 to 0-3 victory. The lads certainly gave it their all and proved too strong against Eire Og and now progress to the next round of the McGuigan Builders intermediate football championship. On the day, we were far more dominant on all lines of the field and used the ball more economically but strange as it may seem, there is still room for improvement because, in truth, the margin of victory could have been more comprehensive such was the number of chances we created and spurned. I don’t won’t to be regarded as a party-pooper but we should all realize that there are bigger and tougher days ahead and speaking of bigger and tougher they don’t get much harder than Donaghmoyne who will be our opponents in the next round and will surely be more competitive than Eire Og and therefore we will need to up our performance as they will present an almighty test for the team. The game is fixed for this Sunday 28th August in Cremartin at 1.30pm. Remember lads “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the bite in the dog” Good luck to you.

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League Fixture

Our game against Carrickmacross is now fixed for Wednesday 31st August at 7.00pm and on Sunday 4th September we play host to Tyholland and the game has a throw-in time of 12.30pm.

Reserve Team Fixtures

Our reserve team are back in action on Friday 2nd September when they host Scotstown at 7.00pm.

Maple Bar Sponsorship

We are very grateful to the management of the Maple Bar for their recent sponsorship. They have been very generous to provide a set of jersey’s for our senior and reserve team. Speaking to Raymond Treanor at the presentation which took place before our championship encounter against Eire Og last Sunday afternoon Raymond stated that “the Maple Bar were pleased to sponsor the club and wished the players and the club the very best for the remainder of year”. It is always pleasing to see that during these difficult financial times there are companies willing to support the club and we greatly appreciate the sponsorship and many thanks to Raymond & Patricia Treanor and Pauric & Bernie Sherry. Please visit ww.rockcorrygaa.ie to view a copy of the presentation photograph. The photograph shows Raymond Treanor of the Maple Bar presenting a set of jersey’s to Jimmy McGeough, chairman of Rockcorry GAA. Also in the photograph is senior team captain Keith Daly (left) and vice-captain Garry Calvert (right).

Under 8 Blitz – Go Games.

Last Saturday morning (20th August) Pairc Naomh Mhuire was a hive of activity as we hosted an under 8 Go-Games blitz where teams from Aghabog, Clones, Eire Og, Killeevan and Tyholland took part. Each team had three games in the space of an hour and there was a great turnout of players and the kids preformed really well and enjoyed the day thoroughly. There was plenty of talent on display from the youngsters and it is a credit to all the work being done at underage level. It was a huge success and great credit is due to everyone involved for organizing the event and many thanks to everyone who travelled and supported the youngsters on the day. Well done.

GRM Minor Football League Division 2

Our minor team played their final league game against Latton on Tuesday 16th August in the GRM division 2 football league and unfortunately three second half goals proved the difference as Latton secured the victory on a score-line Rock Sarsfields 0-15 Latton 3-9. In an exciting game of football which was evenly contested throughout we opened the scoring on the 1st minute when Mark McGuirk converted a free-kick following a foul on Gerard Graham. Latton replied a minute later when they tapped over a free-kick. We regained the lead on the 3rd minute after Gerard Graham scored a nice point but Latton bounced back with scores on the 4th and 5th minutes. Mark McGuirk added a point shortly afterwards to leave the score Rock Sarsfields 0-3 Latton 0-3 after six minutes of play. Both teams squandered scoring opportunities during the next ten minutes but it was Latton who enjoyed a productive spell as they fired over three unanswered points on the 15th, 16th and 18th minutes to open up a three point gap 0-3 to 0-6. Mark Quigley had a great goal scoring chance, on the 20th minute, but his shot was well saved by the Latton goal-keeper but we did manage to reduce the deficit on the 24th minute when Mark McGuirk glided over a lovely point. A minute later Lorcan Smyth was brought down and he converted the free-kick himself to leave just a single point separating the sides. Latton quickly restored a three point advantage when they converted two free-kicks on the 27th and 30th minutes and with half time approaching Mark McGuirk chipped over another free-kick to leave the score at the break Rock Sarsfields 0-6 Latton 0-8. The second half was barely a pup when Fergal McGeough glided over a sweat point and we levelled proceedings shortly afterwards when Gerard Graham lobbed over another. We took the lead on the 3rd minute when Mark McGuirk tapped over a free-kick following a foul on Fergal McGeough. However, just as we started to show signs of getting back into the game we were dealt a massive blow on the 6th minute when Latton converted a penalty to make it 0-9 to 1-8. Disappointingly, we had chances to reduce the gap but we kicked wide on the 9th and 10th minutes while Latton on the other hand notched over a point on the 11th minute to give them a three point advantage, 0-9 to 1-9. Mark McGuirk reduced the arrears back to a single point when he pointed from play on the 12th minute and converted a free-kick on the 15th minute. But crucially, when it really mattered Latton were able to produce the vital scores as they swooped for another goal on the 19th minute to restore a four point lead, leading 0-11 to 2-9. Fergal McGeough and Mark McGuirk were both on target on the 22nd and 23rd minutes respectively and moments later Fergal McGeough shot over once more when he played a one-two with Mark McGuirk to reduce the leeway back to a point, 0-14 to 2-9. Latton proceeded to enjoy more favourable amount of possession and when they broke forward and finished to the net on the 27th minute they once again restored a four point advantage 0-14 to 3-9. As time ticked away it was clear only a goal would rescue the situation but unfortunately Mark McGuirk’s effort on the 29th minute went over the bar to leave the final score Rock Sarsfields 0-15 Latton 3-9. Team & Scorers: Aaron Clerkin, Kieran Corr, Keelan Clerkin, Iain McConnon, Marcartan Kierans, Lorcan Smyth (0-1f), Christopher Kilpatrick, Fergal McGeough (0-3), Gerard Graham (0-2), Rory Moore, Finnain Smith, John Greenan, Mark Quigley, Mark McGuirk (0-6f, 0-3p) John McGuirk.
