DOOHAMLET GFC NOTES

Jim Geoghegan RIP:

Doohamlet GFC and the entire community were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden and tragic death of Jim Geoghegan on Monday last.

Jim was a lightning fast defender who wore the blue jersey with distinction during the late 70s and all through the 80’s and indeed was one of the few Doohamlet players who played on the All Clontibret Parish team James Connollys in his early years.

Jim’s first love was GAA football but he was also a fine athlete and competed in many track and field events. His football career was cut short when he suffered a bad leg break during a Junior championship game in Clontibret but Jim continued to be an avid supporter of his beloved O’Neills. He was also a very loyal supporter of his County teams and would have been so proud of our Ulster titles this year and see Doohamlet players figure so prominently. Only last week Jim was in Croke Park enjoying our battle with Tyrone.

Doohamlet GFC mourns with the Geoghegan Family and his many Friends and hope God gives them strength.

May the Doohamlet sod rest lightly upon him.

All club activity including the weekly Blotto was cancelled on Monday last as a mark of respect to the Geoghegan Family.

Senior Football League: Doohamlet returned to league action last week with an away game against Magheracloone at the Inniskeen venue. The long layoff certainly showed as both teams looked very short of match practice with a lot of passes and shooting not finding their target. Doohamlet were very much in this game as we entered the final quarter with both sides level until a very controversial decision saw Ollie Hughes receive a red card and Magheracloone seized the initiative and ran out winners 2- 18 to 1-09

On Saturday evening Doohamlet played Carrick in a proverbial four-pointer at O’Neill Park.

With a depleted squad Doohamlet made their intentions clear from the start with Ciaran McManus leading his team from midfield and our County Minor player Barry McGinn outstanding at corner forward. The home side led from the throw-in but Carrick fought back in the second half and drew level with two minutes remaining. A draw looked the likely result until Doohamlet won a free 35 metres from goal. Barry McGinn held his nerve and split the posts for a dramatic and most valuable one point win.

Final Score; Doohamlet 1-09 Carrick 0-11.

Senior League Fixture: Our next league fixture will be a home game against Rockcorry on Wednesday evening 21st August

Senior Championship: We now turn our attention to Championship action this weekend when we travel to Clontibret to play high flying Monaghan Harps. Injuries, suspensions, holidays and Minor involvement will have a major bearing on team selection but hopefully we can compete and give a good account of ourselves. Throw In at Clontibret Saturday 5.30pm

Speedy Recovery: Best wishes to Seamus Casey who spent a short time in hospital recently. We hope to see Seamus back in action soon and running the line with remedy in hand.

Lucozade TOPS: Our hard working secretary Bernie O’Neill is currently collecting Lucozade bottle tops. The more Tops we can collect the more gear we can collect for our club, so we appeal to everyone- Don’t throw your bottle away, Unscrew the Blue top and start collecting.
