Sam Maguire. A great evenings entertainment was had by all in the Creighton on Thursday last with the Sam Maguire. The inimitable James Sheerin regaled us all with stories from long and not so long ago, his last time seeing the great trophy in Clones was 1980 at the dinner dance as a Minor County Champion. Donald McDonald as entertaining as always, rewound the clock back to when he was put into Sam as a baby when the great Down team of the sixties won Sam and brought it back to Clones. Declan McKernan and Jake Reihill spoke of the high standards of training and performance required at county level. Colin McCaughey spoke of the community that is the GAA family echoed by our chairman Tom Kelly.

Monaghan have never won Sam but you couldn’t help but be in awe and be inspired by this iconic symbol of the GAA. Instilling this desire to win in our juveniles Donald echoed what we all felt that someday in his lifetime a Monaghan man will lift Sam.

Club Merchandise: Launching the club merchandise Joanne Reihill went through the range which includes Jackets, Hoodies, Polos, Jerseys etc. available in all sizes and at competitive prices, included in the range is the O’Neills brand. These are available for order and will be on display in Morgan’s window on Fermanagh St. very soon.

Eugene Hamill was there and he’ll be in Supervalu on Saturday week with the images taken on the night.

County Hurlers: Well done to the senior hurlers for securing there division 3 status for 2014 with Clones’ own Seamie McLoughlin in corner back and Patrick Hannon out on the wing. Well done lads.

Senior Team; The Senior team left Corduff on Sunday afternoon wondering how we left both points behind us. Completely on top in the first 20 mins racing into a good lead with Adrian Alford scoring 1-2 Fintan Kelly 0-3 and Daragh Holland 0-1 however Corduff salvaged something of the half with 3 late points. Clones playing against the breeze started the stronger in the second half and 10 minutes into the second half led by 7 points. However goals win matches and the concession of 2 goals gave Corduff the momentum to win the game. Team: Paul Connolly, Daragh Graham, Ethan Audley, Ciaran Kelly, Ciaran Morgan, Danny Rooney, Micheal Treanor, Emmet McEntee, Adrian Alford (C), Darren Freeman, Eugene Holland, Daragh Holland, Declan McQuaid, Fintan Kelly and David Freeman . Subs used Colin McCaughey, Sarto Quigley & Packie McCarville. They also played Drumhowan last night in Drumhowan but as deadline for paper is Tuesday we can only hope that they’ve stemmed the tide and recorded some valuable league points. It’s Inniskeen on Sunday at home with a 2:00pm throw-in. Come out and support the lads in their home games, the bit of support is a good as a two point start at home.

Reserves: No football for the lads this week with their next game away to Toome Wednesday the 24th, throw in at 7:15pm.

Minor Training; this almagamated team currently lie joint top of the league, they played Doohamlet away at 7:15pm on Tuesday night. This will not have been an easy match for Clones as Doohamlet who also share top spot, put 4:12 past a good Castleblaney team the previous week. Result and match report next week. Their next match is at home next Tuesday against Killevan, support if you can. Match reports and results are also posted on the Clones GAA Facebook page.

Under 16’s; Great to see the boys (U-16s) put in another fantastic team performance. The boys proved too strong for their Latton counterparts on this occasion winning by a wide margin. The boys played with attacking intent moving the ball at speed and using it intelligently. Midfield dominated the game from the start with keeper and defence always on their toes and ready to deal with any Latton attacks. It was the midfield and forward line that showed no mercy and fine points and some super goals were taken from some fantastic moves, where the right options were taken. Both full backs also scored a point a piece showing that it’s not only midfielders and forwards who can take a score!! Subs that came on were also seen to good effect. The lads know it’s a long season and tougher games lie ahead but they can take great confidence from this performance. Well done boys keep up the hard work, Team/Panel and scorers 13aside:C. Under 14’s; The U14 Division 1 team secured their first win of the year at home to Magheracloone on Saturday with a comprehensive win reflected on the score board. Played in wet and windy conditions the team played some lovely attacking football and defended stoutly. The team held a healthy lead of 3-16 to 0-6 after the third quarter but pushed on against the wind to in the last quarter to register a future 6-05. One of… the goals being a peach of a volley by Ollie Clerkin after some excellent build up work. Under 12’s – Both U12 teams played against Scotstown on Saturday in difficult cold windy conditions in Scotstown. Team 2 lost out by only 3 points but displayed some great attacking football & never gave up right to the final whistle. Hannah Mealiff, Reece Kearns & James Cadden put in strong tireless performances. Team 1 came up against a vastly more experienced Scotstown team the majority of which are 12 years old and playing for some time in this age group. Although suffering a defeat the lads fought bravely. Of the Clones contingent Jamie McQuillan and Hugh McDonald stood out for their hard work & effort.

Juvenile; training continues as normal this week.

Deepest Sympathy; it was with a heavy heart that we said goodbye to Carmel Lynagh last Friday after a prolonged illness, we remember her in our thoughts and prayers. We extend our deepest sympathy to all her family, “Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a Anam dílis”.
