January 16th, 2013

Scór na nÓg:  Colm Kirke took part in the Aithriseoireacht (Recitation) competition at the Ulster final of Scór held in St.Cecilia’s College in Derry on Saturday 12 January.  The “Cross-Eyed Monaghan Hurler” hit the mark again on the night for Colm who now qualifies for the Scór na nÓg All-Ireland Final in Derry on Saturday 23 February.  Congratulations Colm, a precocious talent you should be very proud of yourself as we are of you.  Continued success and the very best of luck in the All Ireland final in Derry, we’ll be organising a bus so stay tuned for more details. Well Done to Drumhowan on their success in Instrumental Music. Good luck in the final!

Annual  Awards Presentation Night in the Hillgrove Hotel on Saturday 19th January 2013, Chairman Tom Kelly will be receiving his Senior Club Official of the year award. There are tickets available so if you’d like to be there you can do so by contacting Secretary Kevin Lynch.  Come along for a great night.

Dinner Dance a note for your 2013 diaries everyone.  The annual dinner dance takes place in the Creighton on the 16th of February tickets are sure to be at a premium on account of the presence of a certain Dr. Ward.  For those of us of the romantic persuasion Yes this doubles as bringing the love of your life for a romantic dinner on Valentines weekend.  If you’re finding this difficult, throw her a few bob to get the hair done, spray job, shine the shoes and send the frock to the drycleaners, this is bound to do the trick. If you need a club tie contact Joanne.

Strength and Conditioning for the Juveniles continues, performance reviews will take place this week, this is a big year for all our players and the work done at this time of the year will stand to them later on.  Strength and conditioning for under 16’s commences again on Wednesday evenings from 7-8 in St. Tiarnachs primary school. Thanks to Majella for the use of the facilities.

Senior Training starts up again on Sunday the 27th at 11:30 sharp.

Senior Team Appointment Michael Slowey has been appointed as coach for the 2013 season working in conjunction with manager Joe Mallon and selector Niall Nolan.  It’s fantastic for the lads to have someone of Michael’s experience, as a player he represented Clones at every level. Always a very classy player he represented both Monaghan and New York at Senior County level.  Indeed in 2001 when Galway won the All Ireland they conceded only one goal, it was Michael who scored that goal in New York.  We’re confident that Michael’s expertise and understanding of the game will be of huge assistance to the lads as the venture into Intermediate football this season.

Mouth-Guards: From 1st of January 2013 it will be compulsory in all football matches and practice for all age grades up to and including minor to wear a Mouth Guard. No player will be allowed to participate in training or matches without one.  The official GAA & GPA Mouth Guard is now available from SuperValu Clones for a fantastic €7.
