Doctor McKenna Cup: Monaghan had a convincing win over an under-strength Donegal side on Sunday last, with Darren & Kieran Hughes very much to the fore in the victory. The squad finished their Section A schedule with a home game against Fermanagh on Wednesday night, and will be in action again this Sunday if they progress to the semi-final stage.

Coaching Course: There will be a “Speed Endurance with & without the ball” coaching course taking place at Cloghan on Wednesday, January 23rd at 7:30pm. The course is free of charge, and looks at practical methods to increase team fitness levels pre-season and during the season. It is aimed at Under 16 to Senior team coaches. Mouthguards: It is now mandatory to use a mouthguard in all Gaelic football matches and training sessions for all age grades up to and including minor from January 1st 2013. The rule will not come into effect at Under 21 and Adult level until January 1st 2014. Players will not be covered under the player injury scheme if they are not wearing a mouthguard. Official GAA mouthguards are now available for purchase through local retailers including Supervalu, McMahons Centra, Lifestyle and Elverys. Club Membership: Club membership fees for 2013 can now be paid to Frankie McCarey, Cormac Sherry or Matt McCrudden. The fee is €30 for adults, and €10 for juveniles. Corporate membership is available for €150 which also includes Ciste subscription for the year, and entry to all home games for the season.

Awards: The Monaghan GAA annual award winners, in association with The Northern Standard will be presented this Saturday, January 19th 2013 at 7:30pm in the Hillgrove Hotel. Scotstown club referee Gerard McCarron will pick up the Monaghan County Senior Referee of the Year award for 2012, while Sean McCrudden collects the Hall of Fame award. The special guest on the night will be Michael Duignan, and tickets are available from assistant county secretary Anita Finnegan on 086-6679440.

Referees: Referees play a vital role in Gaelic games, and without them our games could not take place. New recruits are always welcome, and anyone wishing to get involved should contact any committee member for further details.

Sem Gala Ball: Saint Macartan’s College, Monaghan celebrate 100 years of Gaelic Games in the college this year. To mark this milestone, the college is inviting all past pupils to a special Centenary Gala Ball on Saturday, February 16th in the Hillgrove Hotel. There are many past pupils within the club, and this is a great opportunity for them to support their “alma mater”. All proceeds will go to the redevelopment of the “bottom pitch”. Ladies Club AGM: The Ladies Club Annual General Meeting will take place next Friday, January 25th at 8pm in the Scotstown Complex meeting room. We would urge parents to attend as there are important matters regarding the year ahead to be discussed.
