CLUB NOTES
10th July 2012
Rockcorry 3-7 Corduff 0-15
Sometimes you need a little bit of luck to go your way and last Saturday evening when our senior team played Corduff in the McGuigan Builders intermediate championship lady luck was certainly smiling down on us! The crowd certainly got value for money with twenty-five scores, many of them high quality, and a nail-biting finish to match. While both sides exerted periods of dominance at various stages of the match it was our ability to pounce for goals at vital stages that was the main factor for our victory in this very exciting and highly entertaining, first round, encounter. In fairness, the old mantra of “a win is a win is a win” was undoubtedly the most used sentence by many relieved Rockcorry supporters leaving Pairc Mhic Eoin. Because, despite leading the game by 3-7 to 0-11 with three minutes remaining we looked certain to win with a bit to spare! However, Corduff refused to throw-in the towel and took the game to us and scored four unanswered points to come perilously close to pulling off what would have been a sensational comeback. In the end, we were able to hold on, all-be-it by the skin of our teeth, to win a pulsating game of football by the narrowest of margins on the final score-line Rockcorry 3-7 Corduff 0-15. After the game I caught up with a delighted team manager Jim Clifford and he remarked “it was brilliant to get that win, the lads worked extremely hard and showed massive character against an exceptionally good Corduff outfit” He continued by saying “we need to push on from here and have belief that we’re not just contenders but winners and not be prepared to just do well, we need to set our sights on something bigger and better”. I would like to echo those sentiments and extend my congratulations and well done to all players and management on a good win but as the infamous Fianna Fail slogan goes “a lot done, more to do”, seems very appropriate. Kerry Legend Visit
It’s not very often you get a chance to have a face-to-face conversation with a true GAA Great but on Tuesday 3rd July, the Kerry legend Mick O’Dwyer made the long journey from Waterville, Kerry to visit our club. Unfortunately, it was not the best weather for spectators but the slightly wet and miserable onditions did not dampen people’s spirits or enthusiasm as they waited for the greatest manager of all time. He is a remarkable man, a symbol, whose life and record demonstrates all that is good about our wonderful Association. Before he met our senior team he enjoyed meeting and having the craic with everyone, signing autographs and posed for photographs. After doing a light workout with the team he highlighted the importance of encouragement, to support each other, to back each other, to continue to work-hard and believe you can become all you can be. Think positive, act positive, be positive. It was truly amazing and I have to say it was a wonderful opportunity to meet someone of his calibre. On behalf of the club I would like to sincerely thank him for taking the time to travel to our club and wish him all the best for the future. Thank you Mick O’Dwyer. Oh one more thing, he did promise to make a return visit later on in the year! All we have to do is uphold our end of the deal. You know what you have to do lads!!!
Irish Heart Foundation
I suppose one of the perks being the PRO is that you can edit what appears in the club notes! This week and indeed over the next couple of weeks I will be taking the liberty to promote a couple of upcoming charity challenges that I have signed up for. The first one takes place this weekend and is called “Bike ‘n’ Hike” challenge which involves cycling 100km from Cork to Killarney and then hiking the highest mountain in Ireland, Carrauntoohil. Last year the support and generosity I received from people was truly amazing and once again all funds raised will go to the Irish Heart Foundation and Stroke Action Ireland which I am sure you will agree is a very worthy cause which unfortunately has affected a lot of people in the country. I would greatly appreciate your support for this event in my aim to raise funds for the Irish Heart Foundation and I look forward to hearing from you.
Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League Fixtures
The next outing for our senior team in the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate football league will be on Saturday 21st July when they travel to play Aughnamullen at 7pm. They are on the road again on Friday 27th July when they travel to play Tyholland at 7.45pm.
Laois v Monaghan Ticket Details
The All Ireland Qualifier Round 2 between Laois v Monaghan takes place this Sunday 15th July 2012. Throw in time is 3pm and the venue is O’Moore Park, Portlaoise. Tickets are available for purchase from the following locations: 1. GAA Administration Office, Cloghan 2. Flemings Supervalu, Church Square. Monaghan 3. Ulster Final Ticket Details
The Ulster Minor Football Championship Final between Monaghan v Tyrone takes place on Sunday 22nd July 2012. Throw in time is 12.00 noon. Monaghan has received a limited allocation of tickets and therefore any club member looking for tickets please contact club chairman Jimmy McGeough or club secretary Martina McKeown before Thursday 12th July at 9pm.
Under 12 Team
Our under 12 team were in action last Saturday 7th July, when they travelled to play Carrickmacross B team and maintained their good form with a great win on a final score-line Carrickmacross 2-4 Rockcorry 3-14. While the score-line shows a healthy winning margin it does not in any way reflect the closeness of the game or the spirit and skill that the Carrickmacross team served up. Because in truth, this match was a hard fought battle as, Carrickmacross contested bravely all the way and kept within scoring touch. Thankfully, our lads combined well as a unit and also showed plenty of spirit as they battled all the way and never gave up the effort and it was our ability to notch over some quick-fire points towards the closing stages of the game that ultimately proved the difference. Well done boys and keep up the good work. Their next outing is on Saturday 21st July when they travel to play Monaghan Harps.
Under 14 Team
This weekend our under 14 team are back in action on Saturday 14th July when they travel to play Clones.
Under 16 Team
Unfortunately, Scotstown could not field a team last Thursday 5th July and as a result there was no under 16 game. Their next game is tonight Thursday 12th July when they play Killeevan at Pairc Naomh Mhuire at 7pm.
Go Games Blitz
The next under 10 Go Games Blitz takes place this Saturday 14th July between 9.30 – 11.30am in Cloghan.
