U14D4FL2012. Tyholland 6-15, Toome 5-10.   An under strength Toome U14s suffered their first defeat of the season in Tyholland Park on a wet and overcast Tuesday, 3rd July last. They still lead the league table with 10 points from six games played. Tyholland was first out of the traps with a brace of points before James Wilson opened the visitor’s account with a similar contribution in the 4th and 5th minutes of the first quarter. The next five minutes produced a flurry of excitement with three superb goals, two for the home side and the other by Captain Patrick McMahon, from close range. James brilliantly converted two ‘45 on the 8th and 10th minutes. Tyholland responded by raising another white flag. James had added another point to his tally before the home side rattled the Toome net to finish off the first quarter. Toome 1-5, Tyholland 3-3. The second period was a scrappy affair; the home side dominated the possession stakes and the visitors had difficulty in hitting the target. We conceded 1-3 within the first 6 minutes before, Patrick leading by example, in the 12th minute, engineered his point with some style. The home team added a further three points. Half time score – Toome 1-6, Tyholland 4-9. Toome mentors made positional switches – Cian McEneaney got drafted into the goals, and Charlie McDonnell transferred from mid field to the edge of the square, as a target man. Tyholland opened brightly with a minor, but Toome was in the ascendancy – James split the posts from play and, within a minute, brilliantly converted his third ’45. There followed a Toome purple patch – high balls were raining in on Charlie, and he rammed home three wonder goals within 5 minutes. Cian brought off a number of outstanding saves. The changes were working. Game on! The Reds had reduced the difference from 12 points to 2 within 11 minutes! Two minutes to the end of the period. We got caught on the break for a point on the 15th minute. The opposition won the kick out, which resulted in a well taken goal. It was the worst possible time to concede a major. End of the third period – Toome 4-8, Tyholland 5-11.

The momentum was with Tyholland for the last quarter. They opened with a point after 3 minutes. Supersub Eoin Gorman lobbed over the bar on 7 minutes after a clever build up from the back. We conceded another goal on 8 minutes. James added another classy point, which was negated by the home side a minute later. Then the ‘bould’ captain Patrick struck again, with another deft side foot to the net. The opposition added two more points at the death.Sam could not be blamed for the goals that went past him. Mark was very alert and made some timely clearances. John, as always, battled bravely, threw himself into the fray with gusto and was highly effective. Stephen covered the whole middle third and contributed greatly. Kevin Tibby improves with every match and showed tremendous dedication. Charlie almost turned the game on its head with a sizzling 3 goals in 5 minutes display. His outfield display was also fiercely committed.  James is a natural playmaker that, invariably, takes all the right options and motivates his teammates to greater heights. Kevin ran himself into the ground and was unlucky on a few occasions. He made a great impression. Patrick led by example and his two goals were of the ‘poacher’ variety and were just brilliantly taken. Killian had his best game yet! He made a few excellent runs. Joseph Harte was very involved while in play – he is a talented young man and his best is still to come. Eoin shaped up very well and took his score expertly. John came on at the end and showed up well. U16D2FL2. Toome 2-18, Latton 0-7.  Toome GAA played hosts to Latton at home for the U16 league match on Thursday, 5th July last. Both teams were short a number of regular players, but this did not prevent them from serving up a highly entertaining game of football.   Latton fired over the first point. James Wilson followed with two further points after 3 and 4 minutes. Francis Cole put Toome further ahead by raising the white flag   on 12 minutes. Toome was playing a fast moving possession game and James was on hand, twice, to register minors on 13th and 14 minutes. A terrific Toome attack ended with Sean McMahon splitting the posts, followed by points by James and Ryan Murphy. Sean rattled the net on the 18th minute. Mark McMahon (0-2) and James (0-1) completed the first half scoring.Half Time; Toome 1-11, Latton, 0 – 3.The visitors opened the scoring with a point after 3minutes. Conan McGovern put more daylight between the teams when he slotted the ball into the Latton net 4 minutes later. Mark McMahon added a further point on the 10 minute mark. Latton added two points on 12 and 14 minutes before Mark and Sean replied with similar scores on 20 and 23 minutes. Latton converted an additional score on 24 minutes and James, Mark, Ryan Murphy and Hugo Connolly added further points before the end. This was an excellent workman -like performance from the entire Toome panel.
