Congratulations to 20 year old Summerhill, Meath man, Conor Gillespie, for his RTE “Man of the Match Award, against Kildare, in the Leinster Senior Football semi- final clash in Croke Park on Sunday last. Conor is a grandson of the late Ned Gillespie, a former Toome stalwart and Dr Ward Cup medal recipient in 1958.

U16FLD2. Truagh 2-11, Toome 4-7. St.Mellan’s Park, Truagh, was the venue for the latest Toome U16’s league outing, where they got their winning ways back on track with two points to spare, over a strong, resilient Truagh fifteen. The Toome youngsters showed great guts and determination to bag the two points, in view of the fact that they were short Aaron Kelly, Barteck, Frank Connolly, Keane O’Reilly, and Conan McGovern. Mentors, Colin and Garry, must also take a serious deal of credit for their astute reorganisation of the team. Well done to all!Truagh started brightly and raised a white flag within 2 minutes. Toome’s response was immediate – a sweeping movement up field found Ryan Murphy, who soloed his way through, to crash the ball into the back of the Mellan’s net. James Wilson lofted over a well worked effort on 4minutes. In the 10th minute, Brendan Cole pushed the ball around the post for terrific save, but Truagh, from the resultant ’45, fisted a high lobbing ball into the Victor’s net to draw level. James produced a brace of excellent scores on 20th and 21st minutes, but, within a minute, Truagh forged their second goal. Toome was beginning dictate matters in the mid field area with Sean McMahon, James Wilson, Darragh McKenna and Danny Friskey in top form. After a smarting run from the aforementioned, James punched the ball to the waiting Darragh, who promptly found the Mellon’s net. The visitors followed up with two unanswered points from Ryan and Darragh. Half –time score – Toome 2-6, Truagh 2-3. The home team registered a point within a minute of the restart. Strong Toome pressure resulted in a powerful goal from Luke Murtagh, from close range, after 5 minutes. Truagh held sway for the next 8 minutes, raising 3 unanswered white flags. On the 17th minute, Sean McMahon split the posts with the score of the match, an angled kick from the sideline, close to the end line. The home team added a further 3 unanswered points, and were ahead by a point with three minutes on the clock, when Danny Friskey got on to the end of a smart Toome movement, to deliver an unstoppable shot to the top corner of the net, to claim a two points victory.In goal, replacement Brendan Cole, was solid and composed throughout, brought off a number of telling saves and could not be blamed for either of the Truagh goals. Darragh McKenna worked tremendously hard and took his scores exceptionally well. Stephen Blessing and Hugo Connolly battled with their usual commitment and gave excellent cover to Brendan. Micky Connolly, Mark McMahon and Francis Cole were consistently solid in the half back line, and pushed up with marvellous effect when the occasion demanded. Sean McMahon and Danny Friskey formed a strong partnership and came out on top in the midfield battle. Ryan Murphy led the forward line with flair-his opening goal had a decidedly positive and steadying effect on the overall team. Ciaran McCooey linked up extremely well and was always available to link up. James Wilson, again, made a telling contribution and, was heavily involved in initiating attacks and laying on scoring opportunities, particularly in the first half. Luke Murtagh’s goal was a gem and came at a time when it was most needed.
