It was with deep and profound sadness that Monaghan GAA learned of the sad and untimely passing of Assistant Secretary John Connolly. The news of John’s passing sent shock waves not only through Monaghan GAA circles but further afield in the wider GAA community in Ulster and nationwide. We extend heartfelt condolences to John’s wife Celine, son Mark, daughter Lorraine and the extended Connolly Family at this sad and difficult time.
A member of the Currin Club, John served both club & county with dedication and distinction. His commitment to the GAA will always be remembered with admiration & respect. At Club level John served on the Executive for many years while serving 2 terms as Chairperson, his most recent 8 year term concluded in 2024. Under his stewardship Currin completed the construction of a new stand which was officially opened in 2023.
At County level John officiated in many roles proving to be an excellent leader with a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve while inspiring others towards achieving common goals. John served as Monaghan GAA Vice Chairperson from 2001-2004, Chairperson from 2005 to 2009,Ulster Council Delegate 2010-2013, 2019-2020, Monaghan GAA Coaching Officer 2021-2024, Hurling Committee Chairperson and most recently Assistant Secretary. He was also Monaghan GAA Event Controller at matches with the recruitment of Stewards his main aim at all times.
John’s leadership skills at provincial level were also evident by serving a term as Ulster PRO and up to the present as Deputy Event Controller at matches.
We keep John’s family and the Currin Club in our thoughts and prayers at this sad and difficult time. John devoted his life to the GAA, and his impact on the GAA and everyone who knew him will never be forgotten. John’s passion and dedication to football touched so many lives, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all.
John’s lifelong dedication to GAA was remarkable, and he will be greatly missed by everyone in the GAA community. Ar Dheis Dé Go Raibh Sé.
