Conor McManus Calls Time.

Monaghan GAA wishes to officially announce that Conor McManus, affectionately known as Mansy, has called time on his illustrious Inter-County career. While it is the end of an era it is a day of both reflection and gratitude for the extended Monaghan GAA community at home and abroad as the memories of Conor’s celebrated career come flooding back.

Conor, who began training with Monaghan in 2006 burst onto the Inter-County scene in his debut match against Roscommon in the League in 2007 and in his first Ulster Championship Match against Down in Newry also in 2007.

In a glorious career which spanned 3 decades Conor performed consistently at a high level always pursuing success while preparing, training and playing to the highest standard of competition, passion and excellence. A magician on the ball, known for his unparalleled skill Conor possesses the 5 qualities which it takes to make an excellent player namely discipline, focus, intelligence, teamwork & humility, all of which he has in abundance.

During Conor’s distinguished playing career with Monaghan GAA his achievements are numerous across various competitions:

2 Ulster Titles

3  All-Stars

2 National Leagues ( Division 3 &2)

Railway Cup Competition

4 International Rules Series and the distinction of being awarded Player Of The Series on 2 occasions

And recently, Conor was named at number 15 on the GAA Football Championship Team Of  The Last 25 years scoring 9-291 between 2008 & 2024 and what an achievement that was.

Not only on the field of play was Conor a hero but also off the field of play as he inspired generations of boys & girls to follow their dreams to be the best they could be. Always the  gentleman, Conor had time to devote to his fans whether it was after a match or at a Juvenile Presentation Night. What a legend!

And in his own words : “It’s been my privilege of a lifetime to play for Monaghan the past 18 years. Days I will never forget, lifelong memories and friendships made with the boys. My absolute thanks to Banty, Eamonn, Vinnie and Malachy for everything, every team mate I have played and trained with, along with every member of the back room team over the years, Francie our long standing kit-man, coaches, physios, (who saw plenty of me), doctors, sponsors, Monaghan Co Board, and all those who have helped along the way. Best of luck to Gabriel and the boys for 2025 and beyond. Monaghan people and fans are the best in the country, sharing our best and worst days with absolute loyalty. I will miss the Clones roar and the buzz of it, but will be stuck in the middle of it from now on. Up Monaghan. Mansy.”

Cathaoirleach CLG Mhuineacháin, Declan Flanagan paid a glowing tribute to Conor “I must say, it has been a privilege to witness such exceptional talent performing day in and day out for his club and county. He stands out as one of the finest players to have graced our fields and stadiums over the past quarter-century. His skill places him among the very best and he has served as an inspiration to countless young athletes. His legacy will endure forever in Monaghan and throughout the national GAA community. In addition to his remarkable abilities on the pitch, he was equally impressive off it, always finding time for fans after games. It was common to see Conor surrounded by supporters from opposing teams after matches also. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and the grace you brought to the game.”

Monaghan GAA Senior Manager Gabriel Bannigan added “It is impossible to find words to do justice to what Conor McManus has contributed to Monaghan GAA over the last 18 seasons. I was hoping and praying that Mansy could somehow have made his way back for one more championship campaign. All of us involved with Monaghan know that if Mansy felt there was anything left to give then he’d be back. But what a legacy Conor leaves with us, not just one of Monaghan’s greatest but widely recognised as one of the greatest ever to play the game. I cannot thank Mansy enough for all he has done for Monaghan GAA, the exemplary standards he set, the incredible memories and for inspiring so many of our young people to dedicate themselves to Gaelic football and follow their dreams.”

Thanks for the memories Mansy! Conor will be remembered in the annals of time as one of the greatest GAA players of all time! Enjoy retirement and the next chapter! See you in Clones!
