Seniors: Donaghmoyne claimed an important 2 points in their bid to avoid the drop with a 4-12 to 1-13 win over Magheracloone in the second round of the relegation round robin.
Played in perfect conditions Donaghmoyne with the wind on their backs opened the scoring through two Davy Garland frees, Magheracloone responded with a quick fire 1-1 in the fifth minute, the goal coming from the visitors forcing a turnover inside the Donaghmoyne 20. Donaghmoyne responded with an excellent point from play from Garland which was soon followed by a fine individual point from Stephen Finnegan in the 10th minute. Magheracloone leading by one point were rocked in the 12th minute when a sweeping Donaghmoyne move saw Christopher Cunningham float a pass into the Maghercloone box which was palmed home by Liam McDonald. Two minutes later good pressing by the Donaghmoyne forward line forced a turnover which allowed Ronan McDonald to play a pass across the Maghercloone goal which was scrambled home by Declan Courtney. Two more frees from Garland moved the Fontenoys into a 7 point lead but a typically determined Magheracloone side outscored Donaghmoyne four points to two in the final 10 minutes of the first half, the Donaghmoyne scores coming from frees from Ronan McDonald and Davy Garland.
The second half opened with a Garland free to extend the lead to 6 but Magheracloone playing with the wind hit the next 3 points to halve the deficit with 13 minutes gone. A minute later the visitors found themselves trailing by six again when a well-placed pass by Christopher Cunningham allowed Liam McDonald to turn his man and bear down on goal placing his shot to the keepers’ right. Magheracloone hit back with two points while another Garland free kept the score board ticking over for Donaghmoyne, another point from the visitors narrowed the gap to four with 9 minutes to play and Magheracloone were attacking in greater numbers trying to get back on terms. The Mitchels resistance was finally broken in the 23rd minute when a foul on Christopher Cunningham in the middle of the park saw Stephen Finnegan’s free kick release Declan Courtney into space in front of the Magheracloone goal, Courtney squared the ball to Garland whose effort was saved by the keeper only for Courtney to force home his second goal of the game. There was still some defending to do and Frank Markey who was in fine form in midfield was called upon in the Donaghmoyne
square to prevent any last minute drama. Davy Garland wrapped the scoring with an injury time 45 following a good save from the Maghercloone keeper. Final score 4-12 to 1-13.
The last round of the relegation play offs is on Saturday October 14th when we take on Ballybay in a neutral venue.
