2023 Monaghan Club Football Championships

The Group stage of the 2023 Men’s Monaghan Club Championships were completed last weekend with Round 5. Week done to both our Senior and Junior teams and managements for progressing in the championships into the quarter final stage.

Our Senior Men welcomed Clontibret to Páirc Mhuire for the Greenfield Foods Championship Group 2 Round 5 game on Sunday last in inclement wet conditions. Well done to the Senior men in their 1-16 to 0-13 win and superb performance. The first 10 minutes were a frantic exchange of points and end to end play as both sides chased the 2nd position in Group 2 and were both guaranteed a quarter final place. Scotstown scored the opening point with a well placed free from distance from Rory Beggan. Clontibret immediately equalised, but Mattie Maguire scored his first for the day with a superb point from play. Clontibret equalised again immediately and this set the tone for the first 10 minutes as Scotstown regained a one point lead with both Mattie Maguire and Jack McCarron scoring fine points, making ther score 0-4 to 0-4 after 10 minutes. 5 minutes later Clontibret took the lead with a point, but the Blues responded quickly and opened up a 4 point lead after 22 minutes played with superb points by Jack McCarron, Ryan O’Toole, Darren Hughes, Mattie Maguire and Emmet Caulfield making the score 0-9 to 0-5. Clontibret responded strongly and reduced their deficit to 2 points, but a brilliant point from play from distance by Rory Beggan gave Scotstown a 3 point lead going into injury time. However with the last kick of the game Clontibret scored from a free making the half time score Scotstown 0-10 Clontibret 0-8. The first 15 minutes of the second half was a tight affair, but Scotstown restored their 4 point advantage with excellent points by Rory Beggan, Emmet Caulfield, Jack McCarron and Conor McCarthy making the scoreline 0-14 to 0-10. Jack McCarron extended Scotstown’s lead with a brilliant point from play with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. Clontribret pulled 1 back, before Jack responded with another superb point from play. Clontibret scored another point with 5 minutes ago keeping themselves in touch at 0-16 0-12, but deep into injury time Orin Heaphy kicked a fine speculative shot from distance which found itself just under the crossbar to give the Blues the decisive winning goal making the final score Scotstown 1-16 Clontibret 0-13 Well done to the team and management. Scotstown finished second in Group 2 on 6 points. They next play Aughnamullen in the Quarter Final of the Senior Championship on Sunday 1st October in Clontibret at 4:00pm.

Last Saturday evening our Junior men welcomed Killeevan to Páirc Mhuire for the final Round 5 of the Universal Graphics Junior Championship Group 2 game. Well done to the Junior team and management fir securing 2nd place in Group 2 with a 1-17 to 0-10 win. The first half was a tight championship game and the Junior Men opened up a 3 point advantage going into half time 0-8 to 0-5 with superb points by Finlay Foy (2), Dermot McCrudden (2), Ruairi Sheehan (2, 1 from free) and one each from Padraig Keenan and Caolan Foy. Within 5 minutes of the second half Scotstown were 6 points in front after a well placed goal by James Turley and a fine point from play by Cian McGonnell. Scotstown extended their lead further with brilliant points by Nicky Sherlock (2), James McElwain (2), and Jamie McCarey making the score 1-14 to 0-9 with 10 minutes remaining. Killeevan pulled a point back, but Scotstown secured the win with 3 further excellent points, 1 each by Nicky Sherlock, James McElwain and Finlay Foy. Final Score Scotstown 1-17 Killeevan 0-10. Well done to the team and management. Scotstown finish 2nd in group 2 with 6 points. They next play Blackhill in the quarter final this Sunday 24th September in Truagh at 1:00pm.

The Fixture and results for the Men’s Championships are; In the Greenfield Foods Senior Football Championship, our senior men drew Donaghmoyne, Inniskeen, Clontibret and Magheracloone and are in Group 2. The fixtures are; Sunday 13th August away to Inniskeen (L 0-12 to 1-11); Sunday 27th August home to Magheracloone (W 4-19 to 0-11); Saturday 9th September away to Donaghmoyne (W 2-14 to 0-11); Sunday 17th September home to Clontibret (W 1-16 to 0-13).

In the Universal Graphics Junior Football Championship, our Junior Men drew Tyholland, Killeevan, Oram and Rockcorry and are in Group 2. The results were; Friday 11th August away to Oram (W 1-9 to 2-5); Sunday 20th August home to Tyholland (L 0-10 to 1-12);

Saturday 26th August away to Rockcorry (W 0-12 to 2-2); and Saturday 16th September home to Killeevan (W 1-17 to 0-10). We wish the players and management on both teams all the best in the quarter finals of the Championships.

Our Blues Competitive Games in the past week

Under 13s

Our Under 13 Scotstown B boys were in the Under 13 Division 5 Cup Competition final last Friday evening in CMonaghan Centre of Excellence in Cloghan. They played Magheracloone in an exciting and thrilling final that went to extra time. Scotstown were leading the first half 0-6 to 0-2 after a strong display of excellent football. Magheracloone responded strongly in the second half and were leading by 2 minutes with less than 3 minutes remaining. Scotstown made an immense effort and comeback to take the game into extra time with a scoreline of Scotstown 0-9 Magheracloone 1-6. Magheracloone took a decisive 2 point advantage in the first half of ET, and Scotstown pulled a point back. However despite brilliant pressure from the Blues, Magheracloone held their nerve and won the final. Hard luck and commiserations to the Scotstown team and management, and well done on getting to the final and putting in a brilliant performance. Congratulations to Magheracloone.

Under 15s

Our Under 15 boys had no games in the past week. The U15 Scotstown B boys next play Killanny in the Under 15 Division 5B Championship Final this Sunday 24th September at 12:00 in Cremartin. We wish the team and management the very best in the final. Our Scotstown A team had no games in the past week.

Under 17s

Our Under 17 Scotstown A team played their Round 2 Championship game away to St. Tiarnachs Patricks in the Under 17 Championship Group A in Clones. This was an entertaining fast paced game and Scotstown were leading by 0-10 to 0-2 at half time. The second half went at a blistering pace and Scotstown had opened a substantial lead before a spirited comeback by St Tiarnachs Patrick ensured a nailbiting finish. However the Minor Blues held their nerve securing their second win from 2 games with a final score of Scotstown 2-16 St Patricks Tiarnachs 3-8. Well done to the team and management. They next play Truagh away in Round 3 on Sunday 1st October at 12:00 noon.

Our Under 17 Scotstown B team had no games in the past week. They play Monaghan Harps in the Final of the Under 17 Division 4 Championship which takes place next Monday 25th September at 7:30pm. We wish the minors all the best in their final.

Senior Ladies

Our Senior ladies had no games in the past week.

Under 18 Girls

Hard luck to the Under 18 Minor girls in their 7-9 to 4-11 defeat to Castleblayney at home in Kilmore in the Semi Final of the Under 18 girls Division 1 League on Sunday last. They next play in the U18 LGFA Championship.

Under 16 Girls

Well done to our Under 16 Scotstown B girls in their win against Truagh at home in the Semi Final of the Under 16 Division 2 Championship on Monday last. Congratulations to the team and management on making the Championship Final. Our Under 16 Scotstown A team had no games in the past week. They next Magheracloone at home in the Semi Final of the Under 16 Division 1 Championship next Wednesday 20th September at 6:15pm.

Under 14 Girls

Our Under 14 girls had no games in the past week. The 2023 U14 LGFA Championships starts this weekend. Our U14 Scotstown A girls play Donaghmoyne at home in the Under 14 Division 1 Championship Quarter Final this Saturday 23rd September at 11:00am. Our U14 Division Scotstown B girls play Castleblayney at home in Kilmore in the Under 14 Division 3 Championship Quarter Final this Sunday 24th September at 11:00am

Under 12 Girls

The Under 12 Scotstown A girls team played in the Under 12 LGFA Division 2 Final against Inniskeen on Saturday last in Blackhill. Hard to the girls in their 2-2 to 1-1 defeat, but well done to the team and management on reaching the final and playing brilliantly in the final.

Our Blues Upcoming Competitive Fixtures for the Week

On Wednesday 20th September our Under 16 Scotstown A girls play Magheracloone at home in the Semi Final of the Under 16 Division 1 Championship at 6:15pm.

On Saturday 23rd September our Under 14 Scotstown A girls team play Donaghmoyne at home in the Under 14 LGFA Division 1 Championship Quarter Final at 11:00am.

On Sunday 24th September our Junior Men play Blackhill in the Quarter Final of the Junior Championship at 1:00pm in Truagh, our Under 15 Scotstown B team play Killanny in the Under 15 Division 5B Championship Final at 12:00pm in Cremartin, and our Under 14 Scotstown B girls team play Castleblayney at home in the Under 14 LGFA Division 3 Championship Quarter Final at 11:00am.

On Monday 25th September our Under 17 Scotstown B team play Monaghan Harps in the Final of the Under 17 Division 4 Championship at 7:30pm. Venue TBC

Championship Matters – Panel Discussion event

Scotstown GAA will be hosting a Great night of football Debate, chat, banter, entertainment and more, with some of the best known GAA Personalities on Friday 29th September 2023 in Scotstown Complex starting at 8:30pm. MC for night is Tommy Rooney, sports radio presenter and producer. The All Star Panel includes Paddy Andrews (7 time All Ireland winner with Dublin), James O’Donoghue (Footballer of the year in 2014), Kayleigh Trappe (TikTok sensation), Gráinne McElwain (GAAGO and former Sky Sports Presenter) plus special guests!

Discussion on the night includes a review of County Monaghan’s amazing Championship run to the All Ireland Final this year, and a preview of the upcoming knockout stages in the Monaghan Club Championship. Also reflections on life experiences that led them into sport and some top drawer humour from Kayleigh Trappe. Audience participation is encouraged with some top class banter and wit! This is sure to be an entertaining night’s craic and is not to be missed as the panel discuss the Championships and all things GAA! Bar open to late. This is a family friendly event and everyone is welcome, including juveniles.

Scotstown GAA Online Club Lotto – Jackpot €10,900!!

A massive congratulations to Monaghan’s Paul Cassidy of Tydavnet HC who won the Ulster Diamond Masters Wallball Championship title in Tyrone on Sunday last.

Health and Wellbeing

Scotstown GAA continues this year with its Healthy Club project which aims to help GAA clubs explore how they support the holistic health of their members and the communities they serve. As we now enter the autumn months and the football championships are currently running, we will be implementing Healthy initiatives soon and will update everyone as these happen.

Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others

Gaelic For Mothers & others continues every Wednesday evening at 8.30pm in Kilmore. All welcome to come along. Great way to meet new ladies and catch up with a bit of fun. As there is no competition for the group there is no pressure to attend every week. You can join in at any stage and come when it suits you. You need to be over 25 and living in the parish. Why not come all and give it a go!!

Many thanks to all the stewards and the Field committee for the excellent traffic management and all the hard work in superbly hosting the Scotstown v Clontibret Senior Championship game on Sunday last, and also for all the other recent games over the past few weeks. Thanks to Leah McDonald for the beautiful renditions of Amhrán na bhFiann and to Damian Mohan for superbly MCing and announcing at last weekend’s home championship games.

Under 15 Challenge game

Many thanks to everyone involved in the Under 15 challenge game between Scotstown and Carryduff GAC on Sunday of last week in Kilmore. Well done to all the players and managements and thanks to Carryduff GAC for travelling to Scotstown and taking part.

Under 9 Super Blitz

Well done to everyone involved in the super blitz featuring our Under 9s kindly hosted by Monaghan Harps GAA with a massive thanks. Monaghan Harps hosted the U9 Go Game blitz last weekend and teams from Scotstown GAA Clontibret GAA and Donaghmoyne GAA took part. All the kids had a great day, thanks to all the coaches and parents for all their hard work.

There are Scór senior events happening in September. The Acorn Life Monaghan County GAA Scór Sinsir Stage events take place on Friday 22nd September in Tullycorbet and the quiz takes place on Thursday 21st September in the Scotstown complex. All the best to our representatives in all the events over the 2 nights.
