2023 Monaghan Club Football Championships

The 2023 Men’s Monaghan Club Championships resumed last weekend with Round 4 and the Ladies Championship Semi Finals.

Our Senior Men travelled to Donaghmoyne in the Greenfield Foods Championship Group 2 Round 4 game on a hot and sunny Saturday afternoon. This was the Senior blues third game in the championship. Well done to the Senior men in their 2-14 to 0-11 win and superb performance. The Blues started strongly and opened up a 4 point advantage with superb points by Shane Carey. Mattie Maguire, Micheal McCarville, Conor McCarthy. Ryan O’Toole, Jack McCarron and Darren Hughes (1 point each) making the score 0-7 to 0-3. Donaghmoyne reduced the margin to 2 points before an excellent point by Jason Carey made it 8 points to 5 going into injury time. Donaghmoyne scored another point and pressed on in injury before neat work by Jack McCarron at the forward corner gave Michael McCarville a clear goal opportunity but was brought down earning the Blues penalty. Jack McCarron placed the penalty perfectly into the left corner of the goal giving the Blues a 5 point advantage at half time with a score of Scotstown 1-08 Donaghmoyne 0-6. Scotstown maintained a 6 point advantage during the first 15 minutes of the second half with superb points by Ryan O’Toole, Darren Hughes and Rory Beggan making the scoreline 1-11 to 0-8. Then a superb pass by Jason Carey was brilliantly caught by James Hamill who fired the ball into the net giving the Blues the decisive winning goal. Further well placed points by Rory Beggan, Jack McCarron and James Hamill maintained Scotstown 9 point advantage and finished out the game winning 2-14 to 0-11. Well done to the team and management. They next play Clontibret in the final round robin game this Sunday 17th September at 5:00pm. Scotstown are guaranteed a quarter final place.

Later that Saturday evening in Donaghmoyne the Senior Ladies played the current Ulster Senior Champions and All Ireland finalists Donaghmoyne ladies in the Semi Final of the Combi-Lift LGFA Senior Ladies Championship. The Scotstown ladies put in an excellent performance on a balmy warm evening and at half time were just 1 point behind at 0-7 to 0-6, all 6 points superbly scored by Éabha Sherry. Donaghmoyne started the second half strongly and opened up a 5 point lead before 3 brilliant points, 1 each from Éabha Sherry, Casey Treanor, and Hannah Sherlock kept the Blues within 4 points with 1 minute remaining of normal time. However a strong injury time play by Donaghmoyne secured them a final place in the Championship with a final score of Scotstown 0-9 Donaghmoyne 1-16. Hard luck and commiserations to the Scotstown Ladies, but well done on a brilliant performance and on making the Semi final of the Senior Ladies Division 1 Championship.

Our Junior Men had a bye in Round 4 and were not playing last weekend. Our Junior Men next play Killeevan at home this Saturday 16th September in Round 5 of the Junior Championship at 5:30pm.

The Fixture and results for the Men’s Championships are; In the Greenfield Foods Senior Football Championship, our senior men drew Donaghmoyne, Inniskeen, Clontibret and Magheracloone and are in Group 2. The fixtures are; Sunday 13th August away to Inniskeen (L 0-12 to 1-11); Sunday 27th August home to Magheracloone (W 4-19 to 0-11); Saturday 9th September away to Donaghmoyne (W 2-14 to 0-11); Sunday 17th September home to Clontibret at 5:00pm.

In the Universal Graphics Junior Football Championship, our Junior Men drew Tyholland, Killeevan, Oram and Rockcorry and are in Group 2. The fixtures are; Friday 11th August away to Oram (W 1-9 to 2-5); Sunday 20th August home to Tyholland (L 0-10 1-12); Saturday 26th August away to Rockcorry (W 0-12 2-2); and Saturday 16th September home to Killeevan at 5:30pm. We wish the players and management on both teams all the best in this year’s Championships.

Our Blues Competitive Games in the past week

Under 13s

Our Under 13 boys has no games in the past week. The U13 Scotstown B team are playing Magheracloone in the U13 Division 5 Cup competition final this Friday in Cloghan Monaghan GAA Centre of Excellence at 7:00pm. We wish the team and management all the best in the final.

Under 15s

Our Under 15 Scotstown B side played Inniskeen at home in Kilmore on a warm Saturday afternoon in the Semi Final of the U15 Division 5B Championship. Inniskeen started strongly and were leading by 6 points after 15 minutes. Scotstown responded well and reduced the deficit to 2 points going into half time with a score of Inniskeen 1-3 Scotstown 0-4. Scotstown started the second half with great intensity and found themselves 7 points ahead with 3 superb goals and 1 point after 7 minutes. The Blues maintained their lead throughout the second half with brilliant play and scores and won the game 6-11 to 1-5. Well done to the team and management and they play Killanny in the Final on the weekend of the 22nd September. We wish the team and management the very best in the final.

Our Scotstown A team had no games in the past week.

Under 17s

Our Under 17 Scotstown A team had no games in the past week. They next play St Tiarnach’s Patrick away this Saturday 16th September in Round 2 at 12:00 noon in Clones. The Scotstown B team were drawn to play Truagh Gaels at home in the Semi Final of the Under 17 Championship Division 4 and the game was played on Sunday last on a hot sunny late morning throw in. This was a tense exciting local derby with never more than 3 points between the sides throughout the game. The Blues had taken a 3 points to 1 lead after 12 minutes but within the next 10 minutes Truagh took a 0-4 to 0-3 point lead. Scotstown responded well and retook the lead through a well placed free and superb point but Truagh went in at half time a point ahead with quick points at the end of half time making the score Scotstown 0-5 Truagh 0-6. The second continued in the same as the 1st half, with both sides matching each other’s score with a scoreline of 0-9 all after 15 minutes. Truagh scored a goal giving them the edge going into the final quarter, but the Blues responded strongly and equalised within the next 6 minutes. The final 10 minutes were exciting with never more than a point between the sides and both sides taking the lead before a brilliant decisive winning point in injury by Scotstown secured the final place in the Division 4 Championship. Final Score Scotstown 0-16 Truagh 1-12. Well done to the team and management and all the best in the final. They play Monaghan Harps in the Final of the Under 17 Division 4 Championship which takes place this weekend.

Junior Division 3B Reserves

Last Saturday evening our Division 3B Reserves faced Latton in the final of the Division 3B Reserve League in Sean McDermotts. The first half was challenging for the Blues and Latton ahd a commanding lead at half time of 3-6 to 0-5. Scotstown scored 5 superb points in that half, 3 from Nessan McCrudden and one each from Adrian Carbin and Jason Boylan. In the first 10 minutes the Blues went further behind with another goal from Latton and the score at 4-8 to 0-5. Scotstown put in a tremendous spirited comeback, reducing the deficit to just 5 points with just over 5 minutes to go after superb scores including a goal from Jason Boylan, a point from Jason Boylan and Sahil Arya with a score line of 4-8 to 2-9. However Latton, responded strongly in the final few minutes to secure the cup with 3 further points. Full time Scotstown 2-9 Latton 4-11. Hard luck and commiserations to the Reserve 3B team and management, but well done on making the League Cup final. Congratulations to Latton and many thanks to Sean McDermotts for superbly hosting the final as always.

Under 18 Girls

Well done to our Under 18 girls in their win against Killanny at home in the Under 18 girls Division 1 League Round 9 game on Thursday of last week. They next play Castleblayney at home in Kilmore in the Semi Final of the Under 18 girls Division 1 League this Sunday 17th September at 12:00pm.

Under 16 Girls

Well done to our Under 16 Scotstown B girls team in their 4-8 to 2-3 win against Sean McDermotts at home in the Quarter Final of the Under 16 Division 2 Championship on Tuesday of last week. They next play Truagh at home in the Semi Final of the Under 16 Division 2 Championship next Monday 18th September at 6:15pm. Our Under 16 Scotstown A team had no games in the past week. They next Magheracloone at home in the Semi Final of the Under 16 Division 1 Championship next Wednesday 20th September at 6:15pm.

Under 14 Girls

Our Under 14 girls had no games in the past week.

Under 12 Girls

The Under 12 girls had no games in the past week. The U12 Scotstown A team have qualified for the Under 12 Division 2 Final and face Inniskeen in the final this Friday 15th September at 6:30pm. Venue TBC. We wish them all the best in the final.

Our Blues Upcoming Competitive Fixtures for the Week

Om Friday 15th September our Under 13 Scotstown B team play Magheracloone in Cloghan Monaghan GAA Centre of Excellence in the Under 13 Division 5 Cup Competition Final at 7:00pm and our Under 12 Scotstown A team play Inniskeen in the Under 12 Division 2 Final at 6:30pm.

On Saturday 16th September our Junior Men play Killeevan at home in Round 5 of the Junior Championship Group 2 game at 5:30pm and our Under 17 Scotstown A side play St. Tiarnachs Patricks away in Clones in Round 2 of the Under 17 Division 1 Championship Group A at 12:00pm

On Wednesday 20th September our Under 16 Scotstown A girls play Magheracloone at home in the Semi Final of the Under 16 Division 1 Championship at 6:15pm.

2023 Gloria Memorial Tournament

Last weekend, Emyvale Ladies GFC hosted the 2023 Gloria Memorial Tournament, an event that commemorates their former player, and club member Gloria Corrigan in St Oliver Plunkett Park Emyvale. In total 160 U14 Girls representing clubs from Monaghan, Armagh, Tyrone, and Dublin with 16 teams participated. The tournament showcased some outstanding skills and an exceptional standard of football from all the young players involved. Well done and congratulations to our Under 14 girls team who played at the Gloria tournament The girls finished runners up and narrowly lost to O’Neill Shamrocks. Scotstown GAA Online Club Lotto – Jackpot €10,600!!

Health and Wellbeing

Scotstown GAA continues this year with its Healthy Club project which aims to help GAA clubs explore how they support the holistic health of their members and the communities they serve. We recently had nutritional talks for our U13 to U16 boys and girls’ players and parents. As we now enter the autumn months and the football championships are currently running, we will be implementing Healthy initiatives soon and will update everyone as these happen.

Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others

Gaelic For Mothers & others continues every Wednesday evening at 8.30pm in Kilmore. All welcome to come along. Great way to meet new ladies and catch up with a bit of fun. As there is no competition for the group there is no pressure to attend every week. You can join in at any stage and come when it suits you. You need to be over 25 and living in the parish. Why not come all and give it a go!! Coming up this Saturday 9th September party night in the Social Club! There are Scór senior events happening in September. The Acorn Life Monaghan County GAA Scór Sinsir Stage events take place on Friday 22nd September in Tullycorbet and the quiz takes place on Thursday 21st September in the Scotstown complex.
