Scotstown GAA win their 22nd Monaghan Senior Football Championship!!!

Massive congratulations to our Senior Blues men and management on an amazing championship final victory on Sunday last in Clones.

Senior Football Championship Final St. Tiernachs Park, Clones

Scotstown 0-17 Inniskeen 0-13

Scotstown regained the Mick Duffy cup on a beautiful sunny afternoon in an entertaining final in Clones but were made to fight right to the very end by an excellent Inniskeen side in a game that was in the balance until the final whistle. Scotstown started strongly and were leading by 0-4 to 0-2 after 10 minutes. Jack McCarron scored his first 3of his excellent 6 points of the day during this spell (1 from free, 1 from mark) along with a superb opener by Conor McCarthy. Inniskeen responded brightly and within a further 10 minutes the sides were level at 5 points apiece, with Scotstown’s point coming a well placed score from play by Damien McArdle. Scotstown applied some superb pressure and play in the last 10 minutes of normal time in the first half. In the 21st minute both Darren Hughes and Emmet Caulfield scored a well placed point each, before the score of day was taken by Jack McCarron with an amazing point from distance making the score 0-8 to 0-5. By 30 minutes Scotstown had opened up a 4 point lead with 3 more superb points, 2 from play by Shane Carey and 1 from free by Rory Beggan. However Inniskeen responded strongly in injury time with 2 quick points from play. This was a high-quality first half which saw 20 points scored, including 15 from play, with Scotstown leading by two at the break at 0-11 to 0-9. In the start of the second half Scotstown increased their lead to 3 points with a fine point from play by Jason Carey. However within 10 minutes the sides were level again with strong pressure from Inniskeen making the scoreline 12 points apiece. Inniskeen couldn’t edge ahead and a superb trademark 45 from Rory Beggan restored Scotstown’s lead. Inniskeen again equalised but 3 minutes later an excellent point from mark by Jack McCarron gave the Blues the edge again. A superb point from Conor McCarthy shortly after released the tension a little, and further well placed points by Mattie Maguire (from play) and Jack McCarron (from free) gave Scotstown a more comfortable 4 point lead at 0-17 to 0-13 with 4 minutes of normal time remaining. However 2 minutes later Inniskeen reduced their margin to just a kick of a ball with a point from play ensuring a nervy end to the game. Inniskeen pressed hard for the equalising goal into injury time, but good defensive work by Scotstown ensured that the Blues would regain the Monaghan Senior Championship. Well done and a massive congratulations to the team and management on a superb display of quality football in an exciting final. Well done to the manager, David McCague, and his management team Fergus Caulfield, Peter Donnelly and Diarmuid Scullion on achieving the Senior Championship in their first year.
