Intermediate Championship

Sean McDermotts were the visitors to Pairc Éanna for our second match in this years Championship. It was the away side who opened the scoring from a free but two converted frees from Eddie Walsh nudged us ahead until Seáns hit the opening score from play on 8 mins to level things. It was certainly a game of ‘frees’ in the early stages and two more from the steady boot of Eddie Walsh either side of a Seáns free had us 0-04 to 0-03 up at the quarter-hour mark. Our first from play came after 18 mins from the boot of Mark Grimes who sparked something in our attack as within a few minutes we had taken control of the match hitting 1-03 without reply – our goal coming via a cool finish from Eddie Walsh who was on hand to capitalise on a bad kick-out from the Seáns keeper. A Danny Leegan score had preceded a tasty finish from Tiernan Duffy putting us seven points up. Seáns however, as in the league relegation meeting between the sides last month, were not for lying down and tagged on two more scores just before the break to leave the half-time score 1-07 to 0-05. From the restart we were awarded a free wide on the right and Cillian Leegan was on hand to convert it nicely off the left boot. Seáns responded in kind before Leego, 5 mins later, found space on the left wing this time and again found the target with a good score. Seáns again dug deep though and hit the next two score to reduce the gap to four points before disaster struck for them on 50 mins when their corner forwarded was red-carded for a high elbow. 14-man Seáns certainly threw everything at us and made it a 3-point game with another free on 52 mins. With both teams looking nervous and squandering possession, the next 8 mins saw little to report on the scoreboard, and it took Ronan Grimes to saunter up from defence to fire over a great score on 60 mins to leave the gap at four again. Seáns did manage another point deep into injury time, but our defence stood firm and the goal that Seáns needed never came. Final score: Killanny 1-10; Seáns 0-10

Next up we travel north to Emyvale on Saturday 9th Sept for a 6.00pm throw-in.
