Championship: It was a great start for the home side ion the opening round of the Group 1 fixture against Sean McDermotts on Sunday last 13th August. Toome gave a good account of themselves and although a few discipline errors produced needless frees they never looked to be in trouble. It’s important to win the home games but this was a must win game for Toome to start the campaign on the right footing. After the brief rest in play the players were ready, the field was in good shape, the management had done all they could and it was all down to the 60+ minutes of football. It didn’t take long for Toome to open the scoring with Joey scoring a goal in the opening minute after a quick one two with William and James and a short fist pass from James to Joey to slot her home. Seans were to score from a very soft free only to be moved up. Then James was up next with a well worked point, Seans with another two frees before Paddy McMahon scored from the mark. Then through an unforced error Seans scored a goal to go a point in front. Liam was next with a great run after a quick ball from Jason with a point to level. Sean’s with a well scored point from play along the sideline went back a point in front, this was shaping into a good match. William next with an outrageous free from just outside the 45 with the wind against him, making it look easy. A great ball in from William went to Paddy who as being fouled, still was able to put the ball in front of the sticks for Tincer to come in and fist the goal. The ending of the first half was all about the frees, William first with a handy free followed by James with a free he took at his leisure. Seans responded with two frees on the bounce and then James finished of the scoring with a free to take us to the interval. HT Score: 2:07 – 1:06. James was up after the interval following a clever step back from Tom to play a ball in to Frank who was able to claim the mark, Frank with quick thinking played the ball to James who had made space and was able to pull the trigger and score a goal. Cormac was given a black card and Seans were to score from the free, Shane McCooey who put in a great shift was replaced by Stephen Lambe. Tom McMahon was next with a superb score from just inside the sideline, William then from the mark after a great ball in from Stephen. Seans again responded with a free, Cormac was then back on after his 10 minute stint and Kevin McCooey replaced the hard working Gavin Connolly. Seans produced a score from play, then it was Paddy who was on fire today, scored a belter of a goal in the far corner, with 5 on the clock plus stoppages this game was in the bag now. Liam McCooey was up again with a fierce shot over the bar, Jamie McSkeane made way for Callum Sweeney who was unluck not to score on his championship debut. Seans with a free, then Ciaran McCooey for William but no more scores. FT Score: Toome 4:10 – Sean McDermotts 1:10, well done to the team and management on a great start to the Championship.
