Castleblayney Club Notes 17.08.2023

By Majella Boyd Wed 16th Aug

On Saturday past we played our first game in the McElvaney Waste Intermediate Football Championship away to Doohamlet.  With a torrential downpour just before the match it was always going to be a slippery surface.
With our mixture of youth and experience, Doohamlet certainly put it up to us physically in the first half but the lads gave as good as they could and but for some wayward passing and shooting we could have went in on closer terms than the halftime score of Doohamlet 1-03, Faughs 0-02.
Fortunately our low scoring was only in the first half and the lads certainly changed things around in the second and within 5 minutes of the restart we were on equal terms with some excellent points from play coming off the back of great interplay.
The Faughs lads kicked on and began to control the match, more than matching the Doohamlet forwards and making some slick moves and scores in the forwards.
In the 13th minute we went 2 up and from there we maintained our lead with all the scores being points.
Final score Doohamlet 1-07, Castleblayney 0-14.
A great start to the championship, but it’s only 2 points on the board. No doubt the mgmt and players will knuckle down this week and concentrate on the home game with Clones this coming Sunday, throw in at 5.00pm.  Please come out and support the lads.
On Monday evening past a big crowd at St. Mary’s Park were given an exhibition in minor football ads we went toe to toe with Scotstown.  As usual these set of players were involved on an enthralling match with some great teamwork, passing and individual performances all over the pitch.  The game ebbed and flowed and in the end a draw, 5-16 each was a fair result.  That result leaves our lads with a home S/F against Truagh this coming Monday at 7.00.
U15 Championship resumes in the coming week after a number of weeks break after the league. The Div5 team host Maghercloone on Friday at 7pm while the Div1 team have a bye this week but commence their round robin games with a home game V Clontibret on Thursday week, 23rd August.
Well done to our U15 players Tristan Nugent and Harry McQuillan who made the Ulster u15 panel for upcoming games V Dublin after a series of trials across the province. Tiernan McGeough also took part in the trials and was unlucky to miss out. Well done to the players.

Faughs Golf Fundraiser 2023 – Maurice Hanratty Cup

Friday 25th August sees Castleblayney Faughs GFC host their annual golf fundraiser in honour of Maurice Hanratty. This year’s competition will be an Open Singles Competition and take place at Concra Wood Golf Course.  The golf fundraiser  is named after Maurice Hanratty a former Faughs footballer and a former golfer and member of the Castleblayney Golf Club a sport he came to in his later years after his footballing career
Maurice played with the Faughs during one of their golden eras, the 1960s and 1970s and during his playing days won five senior football championship medals with his club.
Maurice was a gregarious character full of fun and craic and a brilliant raconteur whose stories never lost any humour.  Maurice’s family presented the Maurice Hanratty Cup in fond remembrance of a dear and valued family member who is greatly honoured by this Golf Day.

Congratulations to Glenn Murphy on his photography exhibition in Iontas until end of August.  There are 32 stunning framed photos to view.  We are so lucky to have Glenn to capture so many moments on the field that will be treasures in years to come. Well done Glenn.
