Intermediate League
Sean McDermotts were the visitors for our IFL relegation play-off on Tuesday evening last and despite having started brightly and gone 0-06 to 0-01 up after 17 mins aided in chief by two good scores from Killian Collins and one from Cillian McGahon, we allowed Seans a 5-minute purple patch during which they hit four unanswered points to close the gap to just one. A Conor Vernon goal after 24 mins was the spark that reignited us and this was followed up by an Eddie Walsh free and a good score from Danny Leegan on the stroke of halftime to send us in six points to the good. Points were exchanged early on the 2nd half and with the 6-point gap maintained heading into the last quarter we looked comfortable, however Seans were fighting for their Intermediate status and weren’t for lying down. In the next 12 mins they rattled off six points in a row, mainly from their free taker who was on point every time. A Gavin Flanagan free edged us ahead with 5 mins to play but this too was matched by the Seans marksman. Seans then took the lead with time almost up and it took a magnificent score from the youthful Conaill Marry who meandered up from corner back to slot over the all-important equalizer and sent it to extra-time. The 1st period of extra-time was a cagey affair, and two points were swapped leaving it still level at the break. Mistakes were starting to creep in at this point and it was the team that was going to make the least mistakes that would take this contest and with only two minutes of extra-time remaining Aodhan McConnon got on the end of a good turnover and slotted the ball over the bar to edge us in front once again. Seans again went in search of the equalizer but another mistake during their attack saw them spill the ball on the halfway line and make its way to Eddie Walsh who in turn got fouled for a free way out wide on the 45’ yard line. With time up, Eddie decided to have a go for the posts and what a score it was to edge us two in front. Seans had given it everything, but time had run out for them, and the referee blew the final whistle much to the relief of every Geraldine in the stands and on the pitch.
Final score Killanny 1-17, Seans 0-18
