Pride of the Parish: On Thursday evening last, our Under 15 team created history by winning the Division 1 League Cup following a pulsating 0-13 to 1-05 win against Magheracloone in the Final in Castleblayney. While the boys started strongly, holding a 0-03 0-01 lead after twenty minutes of play, Magheracloone reaped their rewards in a ferocious two minutes of play, where they scored 1-03 without reply to open up a four point lead coming up to the break. A point from a free just before

the whistle was an important score for Aughnamullen to keep within touching distance at half time, with the scores sitting at 1-04 to 0-04. Whatever the Aughnamullen management said at half time was evidently extremely effective as the boys came out like a new team, with a level of intensity and determination that couldn’t be matched. Despite the renewed urgency, it wasn’t until the final ten minutes that Aughnamullen drew level with Magheracloone, with a nip and tuck battle on display up to that point. The final ten minutes of the game saw the Aughnamullen boys hit top gear, with every player on the pitch stepping up to push Aughnamullen over the line. Some inspirational scores from Sean Murtagh, Caolan Daly, Ciaran Deery and Luke Gilliland to name but a few took Aughnamullen from being in a position of three points down to eventually leading by five in the dying stages. A point from Conor McKeown in additional time crucially put the boys four to the good and in the end Magheracloone couldn’t get in on the Aughnamullen goal to pull it back. The final whistle blew and history was made as the Division One League Cup was won, and, following a second half performance for the ages, no one could deny the Aughnamullen boys their success as captain and leader Conor Mulligan lifted the trophy. The team against Magheracloone was the following; Josh Daly, Ciaran Deery, Conor Mulligan, Sean Deey, Phil McCaul, Shane Geoghegan, Jason Cassidy, Sean Murtagh, Luke Gilliland, David Geoghegan, Matt McNally, Conor McKeown, Luke Mulligan, Caolan Daly, Ben McGeough, Daniel Nolan, Ryan Phillips, James Burke, Dylan Hamilton, Sam McGinn and Cillian Lambe. Congratulations to the team and the management team of Gerard McGeough, Colm McGeough, Brian McArdle, Patrick Geoghegan, John Sheridan, Stephen Geoghegan, Shane Lambe & Alan Markey and first aid Teresa McNally.

Seniors: Our Senior team took on Truagh in the Relegation Play-off Semi Final on Tuesday evening in Aughnamullen, where they were beaten on a scoreline of 4-15 to 1-11. This was a game which Aughnamullen could never take control of at any point, with the visitors dominating the play and creating more scoring opportunities, which showed on the scoreboard. The first half was an even contest, with the opening score coming from the boot of Colin Clerkin. Two quick points from the visitors was followed up by an exceptional equalizer from Micheál Bannigan. A further two Truagh scores extended their lead to two, however a Jason Duffy double brought us back level once again and a free kick from Bannigan just before the break ensured that the scores would be level at half time at 0-05 0-05. Truagh got the perfect start to the second half, with a high ball into the square resulting in a goal which made the task at hand much more difficult. To the lads’ credit, they found a response immediately, winning the following kickout and finding Kieran ‘Whack’ Duffy on the run who made no mistake in firing his shot into the roof of the net to level the game out once again. However, this was to be as close as we’d come in the game, with the visitors upping the gears as the half went on. A fisted point from Jason Duffy kept us within touching distance before a second Truagh goal gave them a healthy lead. Points from Bobby McCaul and Kevin Sheridan kept the scoreboard ticking before a quick fire 1-01 from Truagh killed any hopes of an Aughnamullen revival. In the end it was a disappointing loss, but not one that the lads can dwell on as they now face Magheracloone in the Relegation Play-off Final this Saturday at 7pm in a game which will decide who will be dropping down to Intermediate next year. Come out and show your support to the lads in this huge game. Best of luck to the team and management.
