Monaghan LGFA Minors

The Monaghan LGFA Minors faced Galway in the All Ireland Semi Final on Wednesday of last week in Longford. Hard luck to the team and management in their defeat, but well done to our Blues on the panel, Katie McCaffrey, Ella McKenna, and Eabha Sherry, and the team and management on winning the Ulster Platinum Championship and on their amazing 2023 journey.

2023 Monaghan Club Football Championship draws

Recently, Monaghan GAA held the draws for this year’s adult men championships. In the Greenfield Foods Senior Football Championship, our senior men drew Donaghmoyne, Inniskeen, Clontibret and Magheracloone and are in Group 2. The fixtures are; weekend 13th August away to Inniskeen; weekend 27th August home to Magheracloone; weekend 9th September away to Donaghmoyne and weekend 16th September home to Clontibret.

In the Universal Graphics Junior Football Championship, our Junior Men drew Tyholland, Killeevan, Oram and Rockcorry and are in Group 2. The fixtures are; weekend 13th August away to Oram; weekend 20th August home to Tyholland; weekend 27th August away to Rockcorry and weekend 16th September home to Killeevan. We wish the players and management on both teams all the best in this year’s Championships.

Our Blues Competitive Games in the past week

Under 13s

Our Under 13 boys teams commenced their 2023 Cup competitions last weekend. Our Scotstown A team faced Magheracloone away in the Under 13 Division 1 Cup Competition Group A Round 1 game on Saturday last. Hard luck in their defeat. They next play Donaghmoyne at home in the Under 13 Division 1 Cup Competition Group A Round 12 game on Saturday August 5th at 11:00am.

The Under 13 Scotstown B team played Donaghmoyne at home in the Under 13 Division 5 Cup Competition Group B Round 1 game on Sunday last. Well done to the team and management in their win. They next play Magheracloone away in the Under 13 Division 5 Cup Competition Group B Round 2 game on Sunday August 6th at 11:00am. The Scotstown C team’s first game is Inniskeen away in the Under 13 Division 5 Cup Competition Group B Round 1 game on Saturday August 5th at 12:45pm.

Under 15s

Our Under 15 Scotstown A side played Clontibret in the Under 15 Division 1 League Shield Final on Thursday of last week in Doohamlet. Well done and a massive congratulations to the Under 15 A team and management in a superb win and performance. Scotstown started strongly and were ahead by 3 points after the first quarter with fine points by Daire Corrigan, Mark Connelly and Darragh Feeney. Clontibret responded well and levelled the score at 0-3 all within 5 minutes before Scotstown pressed again scoring 5 superb unanswered points (2 by Mark Connolly, 1 by Darragh Feeney, Nathan McCabe and Caolan Clerkin) before half time making the score Scotstown 0-8 to 0-3. Clontibret started the second half strongly and withon the first 2 minutes scored a goal and a point reducing their margin to just 1 point. Scotstown and increased their lead to 4 points with brilliant points by Ellis Foy (2 from play), Nathan McCabe and Darragh Feeney. With 10 minutes remaining Clontibret reduced their deficit to 2 points, but again Scotstown applied pressure and Ellis Foy score 2 more superb points from play before Darragh Feeney scored an excellent foal making the score 1-14 to 1-7. With 3 minutes remaining Senan Mullen scored a well placed point from play. However Clontibret scored a goal ensuring a nervy end to the final. The Blues defended the strong pressure from Clontibret efficiently and secured the Under 15 Division 1 League Shield Cup with a score line of Scotstown 1-15 Clontibret 2-7. Congratulations to the lads and management. Commiserations to Clontibret and many thanks to Doohamlet GFC on superbly hosting the final.

Our Under 15 Scotstown B boys played Castleblayney at home in in the Under 15 Division 5A League Shield Semi Final. Hard luck to the lads in their 2-17 to 2-11 defeat and all the best in the Championship later.

Under 17s

Well done to our Scotstown A team in their 3-16 to 2-11 win against Truagh at home on Thursday of last week in the U17 Division 1 League Round 4 game. They next play Carrickmacross away in Round 1 of the Under 17 Division 1 League this Sunday 30th July at 12:00pm. Hard luck to our Under 17 Scotstown B team in their 3-9 to 1-9 defeat to Monaghan Harps away on Tuesday of last week in the U17 Division 4 League Round 4 game. They next play Truagh at home in the Semi Final of the Under 17 Division 4 League this Friday 28th July at 7:30pm.

Senior Division 1A Reserves

Our Division 1A Reserves played their final League game on Tuesday of last week when they played Monaghan Harps at home in Round 10 of the Reserve League Division 1A. The game finished in an exciting 0-11 all draw. That concludes their season and well done to the team and management on a successful 2023 which saw the Senior Reserves retain the O’Duffy Cup.

Junior Division 3A Reserves

Our Division 1A played Blackhill in the Reserve League Division 1A League Shield Final on Friday last in Cloghan. A massive Congratulations to the Reserves and management on their superb win. The first 10 minutes were tense and a tight affair in inclement weather conditions. The Blues led by 0-4 to 0-2 with well placed points by Ben Sherlock (2 points) and Shane Maguire and Paul Maguire, before a superb goal by Adam Monahan opened up a 5 point lead for Scotstown. Blackhill scored a point, but the Blues pressed further scoring 4 further points before half time, with fine scores from James McElwain, Cathal Caulfield, Declan Treanor and Paul Maguire making the half time score 1-8 to 0-4. In the first quarter of the second half Scotstown scored 3 further points to Blackhill’s one, with fine points by Ben Sherlock and James McElwain, before a second superb goal was scored by Adam Monahan making the score 2-11 to 0-5. James McElwain added a final excellent for the Blues to secure the Division 3A League Shield Cup. Well done lads and commiserations to Blackhill and thanks to Monaghan GAA for hosting the final in Cloghan. Junior Division 3B Reserves

Our Division 3B Reserves had no games in the past week. They next play Latton away this Friday 28th July in Round 9 of the Reserve League Football Division 3B at 8:00pm.

Senior Men League

Our Senior Men had no games in the past week. They next play Magheracloone away on Tuesday 25th July in the Senior League relegation playoff Semi Final at 7:30pm.

Junior Men’s League

Our Junior men had no games in the past week. They next play Oram away in the Junior Championship on weekend of August 13th.

Senior Ladies

Our Senior Ladies had no games in the past week. The Monaghan Ladies Senior League commenced last weekend. However our Senior Ladies game against Truagh away in Round 1 of the Senior Ladies Division 1 game scheduled for Sunday last was postponed due to the inclement weather. They next play Donaghmoyne at home in Round 2 of the Senior Ladies Division 1 game at 11:00am on Sunday 31st July.

The Monaghan Ladies Championship commences in August. The Scotstown Ladies are playing in the Senior Championship and are in Group A along with O’Neill Shamrocks, Emyvale and Corduff. Their first game is against Corduff at home in Round 1 on Saturday 19th August at 7:00pm.

Under 18 Girls

Our Under 18 girls had no games in the past week. They next play Tyholland away in Round 4 of the Under 18 girls Division 1 League on Thursday 27th July at 7:30pm.

Under 16 Girls

Well done to our Under 16 Scotstown A girls in their win against Aughnamullen at home in Round 7 of the Under 16 girls Division 1 League on Monday last. They next play Magheracloone away in Round 8 of the Under 16 girls Division 1 League on Monday 31st July at 7:30pm. Well done to our Under 16 girls Scotstown B girls who defeated Emyvale away in the Under 16 girls Division 2 League Round 3 game on Thursday of last week. They next play Monaghan Harps at home in Round 7 of the Under 16 girls Division 2 League on Tuesday 25th July at 7:00pm.

Under 14 Girls

Our Under 14 Scotstown A girls had no games in the past week. Hard luck to our Under 14 Scotstown B girls in their defeat to Castleblayney away in Round 2 of the U14 Division 3A League on Tuesday of last week.

Under 12 Girls

Well done to our Under 12 Scotstown A girls team in their win against Corduff at home on Saturday last in Round 2 of the Under 12 Division 2 league. They next play Aughnamullen away this Saturday 29th July at 11:00am in Round 1 of the Under 12 Division 2 league.

Well done to our Under 12 Scotstown B team in their win against Tyholland at home on Tuesday of last week in Round 2 of the Under 12 Division 3B league and well done to the U12 Scotstown B girls in their home win against Magheracloone in Round 3.

The July Ciste draw will take place this Saturday Night, July 29th at 10:00pm, in the Social Club. You can purchase your Ciste tickets in our local shops. There are tickets, envelopes and collection boxes in each of these shops; McMahon Centra, Scotstown; McAloons Knockatallon; XL Ballinode & Killylough. Under 11 Spring League

Well done to our Under 10 boys who finished up their U11 Spring League on Tuesday of last week in Ballybay. The boys had a great Spring League, competing so well v Under 11 teams throughout the county. The future is bright for An Bhoth! Thanks to Ballybay Pearse Brothers GAA for hosting the fixtures.

Wellwishes for Declan Treanor and Colin Woods

We wish both Declan Treanor and Blackhill GAA’s Colin Woods a speedy recovery from a clash of heads injury on Friday last at the Division 3A Reserve Shield Final.

Health and Wellbeing

Scotstown GAA continues this year with its Healthy Club project which aims to help GAA clubs explore how they support the holistic health of their members and the communities they serve. We recently had nutritional talks for our U13 to U16 boys and girls’ players and parents. As

we now enter the summer months and the football is up and running, we will be implementing Healthy initiatives soon and will update everyone as these happen.

2023 FRS Recruitment GAA World Games

The initial stages of the FRS Recruitment GAA World Games is being played out at Owenbeg Centre of Excellence in Owenbeg Derry this week from July 24th to July 27th, with the finals taking place on July 28th at Celtic Park, Derry City. This is the Fourth-ever staging of what is a major international festival and celebration of Gaelic Games participation all over the globe, and features a record breaking 93 teams totalling 1,300 players coming to Derry to take part.

The unique feature of the FRS Recruitment GAA World Games is that there is competition for Irish-born (Open) and native-born (International) teams representing more than 10 regions round the world. We wish Noel McGinnity all the best this week in the competition.
