Castleblayney Hurling Club Notes 08.06.2023

By Majella Boyd Thu 8th Jun

Lory Meagher All Ireland Champions What a day for Monaghan Senior hurlers. All Ireland champions. They stood up to a strong test from Lancashire and hurled like champions finishing on a scoreline of 3.22 to 3.20. This is true testament to all the coaches, past and present, in our own club in Castleblayney and up and down the county who ‘believed and kept on dreaming’. And on Saturday that dream came true. Huge congrats to every team member, management and backroom team, we are proud of you all. We must make special mention of our clubmen who, along with the entire team, have shown commitment, dedication and resilience on the path to the final. Well done and a huge bualadh bos for the following club men: Niall Garland (Joint Captain), Aaron Kenny, Hugh Byrne, Conall McHugh, Fergal Rafter, Thomas Hughes, Declan Hughes, Pauric Malone, Paudie Heavin, Colin Merrick, Paddy Finnegan, Cormac McNally & Stephen Lambe and to our club representatives on the management team, Jimmy Lacey & Deaglan Crowe. Bainigi sult as an bua!

Referees we are actively encouraging people who have played the game to consider taking up the referee mantle. Without referees our games cannot go ahead, it is a way of giving back to the game and indeed in staying involved with the GAA family. If you would consider taking up the challenge, contact any committee member who will ensure that you are trained and supported all the way. Give it a go!

U7’s/U9’s hurled for 80 minutes last Wednesday 31st May at St Macartan’s College at the 3rd Monaghan Go Games Blitz excellently hosted by Monaghan Harps. They played 4 matches against Monaghan Harps, Truagh, Inniskeen, & Carrickmacross and showed great skill and determination.

Mick Hannon DHL Reserve Final the lads came up short in the Final last week, congratulations to Inniskeen on a good win.

U15 Development squad overcame Cavan last week and have now qualified for the semi-final of the Hibernia Cup in July. Well done to our club representatives Conaire Casey, Tome Duffy, Christian Traynor, Liam Bolger & Cathal Malone.

Best Wishes to our young members who commence Junior & Leaving Cert exams this Wednesday 7th June, do your best, that will always be good enough.

Condolences for Gerry Murphy Castleblayney Hurling club wishes to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Gerry Murphy, The Crescent, Castleblayney. Gerry represented the club for many years as a player and gave huge service as a hurling coach at club and County level. He also represented Monaghan as a player and manager at County level and managed the County Minors to The All Ireland C title. Gerry will be remembered as a true hurling man who inspired many young players with his knowledge and enthusiasm for the game. He is predeceased by his father, Eddie who was also a Blayney Hurling legend. Gerry, with his sister, Mary, and the late Eddie, has given a lifetime of service to the Castleblayney camogie club also. It is indeed fitting that on the day that Gerry bowed out of this life, Monaghan Senior Hurlers were crowned Lory Meagher Champions in Croke Park with a minutes silence being observed in honour of Gerry’s passing. To his sisters, Mary & Bridie and the extended Murphy family, we extend our deepest sympathies. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.

Ulster Hurling Roadshow is organised for Saturday 10th June in Tyrone GAA Centre, Garvaghy. The Roadshow will run from 10am to 2pm with three practical sessions focusing on 1. Developing Goalkeepers 2. The Hurling Manager 3. Running a coaching session, all sessions being facilitated by top coaches.
