Double Monaghan success in Tullamore!

All Ireland Senior County Football Championship Preliminary Quarter Final Result Monaghan 1-11 Kildare 0-13

All Ireland Minor County Football Championship Semi Final Result Monaghan 1-11 Kerry 0-11

What a day in Tullamore last Saturday as both Monaghan Senior and Minor teams pulled a remarkable feat and set themselves up in the latter stages of the All Ireland knockout stages with the Minors in the first All Ireland final to feature a Monaghan team since 1939 when Roscommon beat Monaghan in the All Ireland Minor final. The Monaghan Senior team secured a place in the All Ireland Quarter Final when Man of the Match, Conor McCarthy scored a superb calm and collected last gasp match-winner as the Farney men dug deep yet again to dramatically progress in the competition. Monaghan spent much of the game behind Kildare, despite starting strongly and taking the lead to a brilliant Conor McCarthy goal, were behind by three points with half an hour or so remaining and looked in real danger of crashing out of the Championship. But Monaghan outscored Kildare by 0-6 to 0-2 from there, firstly drawing level and then pinching a famous win with Conor McCarthy’s 75th minute brilliant point. Well done to all our Blues who played, Rory Beggan, Shane Carey, Darren Hughes, Kieran Hughes, Jack McCarron, Conor McCarthy and Ryan O’Toole, with superb scores totalling 1-7 from Conor McCarthy (1-2); Jack McCarron (0-3, 1 from free); Rory Beggan (0-1f) and Darren Hughes (0-1m), and to the team and management. Monaghan have been drawn against Armagh for the All Ireland Quarter Final and it takes place this Saturday 1st July at 6:00pm in Croke Park. We wish all our Blues, the team and manager Vinnie Corey and his management team the very best.

Earlier that day in Tullamore the Monaghan Minors faced Kerry in the All Ireland Minor Championship Semi Final. The Monaghan minors played an amazing performance to secure a place in the final. The first half was a tight affair with Kerry leading be 2 points going into injury time, but an excellent, well placed 45 from Tommy Mallen resulted in an own goal to give Monaghan a 1 point advantage at half time with a score of 1-5 to 0-7. Monaghan remained in the lead throughout the second half with superb defending and 6 further points, 3 of which from Man of the Match Seán Óg McElwain. Seán held his nerve to score Monaghan’s 2 final points at the end. Well done to all our Blues who played Donnchadh Connolly, Sean Óg McElwain, Max Maguire, and Tommy Mallen with brilliant scores from Seán Óg McElwain (0-4, 2 from free, 1 from mark) and Tommy Mallen (1-1), and to the team and management. Monaghan have booked themselves in the All Ireland Minor Championship final and will play Derry in the Athletics Ground, Armagh on Sunday 9th July at 1:00pm. We wish all our Blues, the team and management the very best in the final.

Scór agus Cultúr

Scostown success at the Spraoi Scór!

Thanks to our Cultural Officer Paddy Sherlock for the following report.

Scotstown club had excellent participation in the County finals of Scór na bPaisti (spraoi scor). On Thursday night 15th June in the Iontas Centre Castleblayney, two quiz teams represented our club. Team one consisting of Daithi Og McCague, Padraig McDwyer, Cayla McGinnitty and Aoife McArdle and they took bronze behind Latton in first and Monaghan Harps in second. Our second team of Harry Casey, Ultan Gallagher, Cait Clerkin and Katie Mullen finished a point behind in fourth place. Well done to both teams!

On Friday night in Clontibret in the stage events took place. Our dancers, Leah Treanor, Nicole Bennett, Ellie Meehan, Nadine McCarra, Catherine Meehan Abi Corrigan, Joshua Mullen and Peter Mc Carra claimed gold with Gael Triucha in second and Killeevan third. The same eight dancers also won the Set dancing.

In instrumental music, our team of Mia Cusack Anne Keyes, Ellie Coney Abi Corrigan and Rachel O’connor had to be content with third place, despite giving an excellent performance, with Monaghan Harps first and Sean McDermotts second.

In Recitation Emma McKenna was an energy saving star and claimed first place with an exceptional performance of diction and action. The poem, written by Alice Daly called “The three wee Pigs” cleverly told how one could save energy and save money while building their house. The cultural officer would like to congratulate all who stepped forward to represent their club. Thanks to the coaches especially Ciara Connolly with the dancers. Nial O’connor Clare Daly and Teresa Mohan. Also to the parents for their efforts and loyalty to the promotion of Scor and Culture in our club. We hope to see this talented bunch represent our club for many years to come. An Bhoth abú.

Tá an Ciorcal sa Spórtlann gach Oíche Máirt ag a 8 a chlog! Buail isteach don craic is comhrá!
