Intermediate League
Castleblayney were the visitors to Pairc Éanna on Sunday last, and although this time last year there were 2 divisions between us, the grade difference was certainly not evident in the opening stages of the match as we raced in to a 0-04 to 0-00 lead after only 5 minutes – our scores coming from Gavin Flanagan, Danny Leegan (2) and an Aodhan McConnon mark. Blayney tagged on a free before Danny Leegan converted another mark after a brilliant catch. Blayney got themselves back into it with the next two scores before Gavin Flanagan hit a great score from distance to leave us three up after the first quarter. Frees were exchanged then, Aodhan McConnon converting ours from close range, but it was the Faughs who grabbed a foothold in the game from then to half-time defending resolutely and scoring two more well worked points to leave themselves well in the game going in at the break only a point behind 0-07 to 0-06. Straight from the 2nd half throw-in, Blayney had themselves level but we responded well with fine scores from Gavin Flanagan & Cillian Leegan. However, Blayney showing their experience, came right back at us hitting the next two points to level things once more. We again showed great spirit in wrestling back the lead with Aodhan McConnon hitting two more points, one from a free, making it 0-11 to 0-09 approaching the final quarter. Blayney again clawed it back to parity before Callum Murray fired over the bar when a possible goal chance had presented itself. The game was certainly in the melting pot and when Oisin Burns fisted over after 53 mins to restore our 2-point lead we looked to be gaining control. However, Blayney again chipped away, getting perhaps a bit too much joy coming down our middle and hit the next two scores to level the match 0-13 a-piece with only 3 minutes left. The killer score then came in the 58th minute when a speculative ball in resulted in a bit of ping-pong in our box and saw the ball ricochet into our net and in the context, a big score for Blayney in what had been a tight match all the way through. We tried in vain to get a goal in the dying moments to get something out of the game but all we could muster was a Conor Grimes point which left the deficit 2 points at the full-time whistle. A tough result to take after being in control for long periods but a performance which we can certainly build on. Final score Killanny 0-14 Castleblayney 1-13.
Next up we play neighbours Carrickmacross in Emmet Park this Saturday evening at 7.00pm
