Aughnamullen Club Notes 27.04.2023

By Majella Boyd Fri 28th Apr

The late Peter Geoghegan

On Wednesday last news came around at the passing of an Aughnamullen Great Peter Geoghegan Lisduff. Peter or affectionately known as “Wee” Peter was an Aughnamullen Sarsfield to the backbone firstly serving as a player and then as a supporter throughout his lifetime.

Peter’s football prominence came in the 1960s where he was a member of the golden 3 in a row team of 1964 -66 where they won 2 Dr Ward Cups in 1964 & 1965 and 1967 Junior Championship and Intermediate Championship of 1972/73 and Intermediate League of 1973. He continued to play with both the Senior and Junior B Team right up until the mid-1970s. Peter made corner forward position his own during this period and could be seen to score many a crucial score in the club success at that time.

Following his football career Peter always took a helping hand in the club’s affairs in any he could and in the mid-1990s served on the local FAS scheme. During this era was the erection of new turnstiles, players tunnel and new dugouts. Also, during this time Peter was involved in the stand subcommittee which erected new stand in 1995 which is still regarded as one of the best in the county and Peter also served as Groundsman for the club in 1997 and served on the committee at that time.

Always and ever, Peter was a great supporter of our club never missing a game supporting all our teams from Senior to U12 and he took great pride in this and always kept fellow supporters in high spirits with his witty conversation and always with a smile on his face.

In 2009 alongside his brothers Phil & Hughie RIP Peter was inducted into the Clubs Hall of Fame an honour he was very proud off.

On behalf of the club, we would like to offer our sincerest sympathy to his brothers Tom & Phil, his Sister Bridie, Sister in Law Eleanor and his nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces.

Seniors: Our senior team travelled to Inniskeen on Sunday afternoon last in the second round of the senior league, where they played out a 1-10 to 0-13 draw. Inniskeen raced into a two point to no score lead, and stayed in front for the majority of the first half. After Jason Duffy opened our scoring, a brace of frees from Tiernan Duffy was followed by a point from Colin Clerkin to level the game up before the break at 0-04 0-04. The boys in blue got off to an electric start in the second half, with points from Mark McArdle and Tiernan Duffy followed by a volleyed goal from Keith Sheridan putting us six points to the good at 1-06 to 0-04. During this period, Inniskeen went a man down from a sending off, and unfortunately the lads couldn’t fully capitalize on this. The hosts clawed their way back into the game and eventually regained the lead in injury time. However, as he as already done on numerous occasions, Jason Duffy came to the rescue with a brilliant, last kick of the game free to level the game and rescue a well deserved point for Aughnamullen. A much improved performance was on show in this game, and the boys will be determined to get their first win on the board soon to show for this improvement. Our next game is at home to Clontibret on Sunday the 7th of May at 4pm. Best of luck to the team and management, all support welcome.

Reserves: Our reserve team take on Latton tomorrow evening, Thursday at 7.30pm in Aughnamullen in the O’Duffy Cup Reserve Championship. Come out and support the lads, best of luck to the team and management. Their next game in the league is away to Corduff on Wednesday the 10th of May at 7.45pm.
