Community HELLO Walk

Thursday 30th March 2023-HELLO Community Walk

Looking forward to welcoming as many as possible to come along next Thursday and join in our HELLO walk . This is an initative by @Mental Health Ireland that we are delighted to get involved in.

The concept is simple … there are five steps to saying H.E.L.L.O. and asking the question.

H – Say Hello. This encourages starting the conversation, asking the question, using open ended questions and choosing the right place to talk.

E – Engage with the person. This is about being friendly and engaging and using inviting body language

L – Listen to the person. Be relaxed and show that you are listening by nodding appropriately, and asking open ended questions that will give you more of the story.

L – Learn about the person. Let the person know you have listened by repeating back what you have heard them say. Ask if they are aware of supports available and have that information to hand. Example of supports include Self Help Groups like AWARE, GROW, SHINE, their Family Resource Centres, GP etc. Find details on lo-cal supports by going to www.yourmentalhealth.ie.

O – Ongoing support. Check back in with the person and see how they are getting on.

On the evening we are delighted to be joined by our special guests…

Thomas Hynes … OT Leader 2023

Marie Clear…OT Leader 2023

Ailbhe & Bob who recently completed the amazing Wild West Run from Latton to Westport raising over 50,000.

and Kim Doherty the Development Officer – Cavan Monaghan with Mental Health Ireland.

There will be some goodies for walkers and refreshments in bar area afterwards. This is another project organised by our Healthy Club officer Christina Weldon so please come along and show your support on the evening and most importantly say HELLO….

A massive Congratulations to our Healthy Club officer and Secrtetary Latton O’Rahilly GAA Healthy Club of-ficer receives Irish Sport Monaghan Volunteer of the Year Award

Christina Weldon can only be described as the epitome of what a volunteer is.

She has been the driving force from 2013 in Latton in relation to obtaining GAA The Healthy Club but more im-portantly ensuring that each year the club lives up to the status opening its doors to new project each year. Her contribution has been immense in ensuring the Club lives up to its moto “At the Heart of the Community “ . She has set up and run endless classes , continually sought grant funds for tutors etc.. Over the last 2 year many projects in the area of mental health have been undertaken . We have had online talks during Covid and moving to inface when the Club was permitted . Some of the items she was instrumental in setting up that continue yearly are

-Latton Lights Up for Operation Transformation each January ensuring people get out as much as possible cul-minating in the RTE Cameras visiting in 2020.

-Healthy Eating Talks

-Recipe for Success ( a teenagers programme on healthy eating)

-Annual HERO where we showcase a Juvenile Members with Special Needs in a special evening where they are No 1 in their Club .Over the last 2 year we have given awards to 3 of our Heroes to ensure that our club is an open and welcoming place for all.

-Running programmes for the older members especially post covid to ensure they can return to exercise in a safe environment and are nor fearful of being around people again.

Christina is an integral part of our development committee and with her experience as a Chartered Accountant has been instrumental in projects undertaken to ensure they are completed to a high specification and within the financial confines of the Club . From 2010 to date the project undertaken of “Vison 2020” has seen an in-vestment in the last 5 year in the Club of almost €500,000. Christina was instrumental in all the recent fund-raisers .. being the MC and Compere of or Gala Ball in 2017 at the project start and in the organising commit-tee for our Oskars in 2019.

Christina never says No despite being a busy mum of 3 who works Full time she is always at the end of the phone . She has worked hard as Club secretary to ensure the Club continues to open up to all within the com-munity .
