Invitation to Webinar – ‘Difficult Conversations’ Talking to your Teens – 17th February @ 7.30pm

Please find below  an invitation to join us on Thursday 17th February for our “Difficult conversations” webinar. This event came about as a result of feedback from service providers on concerns coming from parents about how to deal with difficult conversations and situations when it comes to their teenager’s mental health and wellbeing.

The event will be hosted by Miffy Hoad, Development Officer with Mental Health Ireland for the Cavan Monaghan area and Miffy will be joined by Dr Colman Noctor, Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist who will give his insights on supporting teenagers through tough times. We will also hear from a Monaghan parent who navigated the mental health journey with her son and a local Cavan Parent Plus Facilitator will outline some of the tips and tools parents can gain from completing a Parents Plus for Adolescents programme.

There will be a Q & A session at the end so please feel free to send any questions you would like addressed on the night to myself or to Miffy at miffy@mentalhealthireland.ie

We understand that this is a very difficult subject and one that is hard to cover in one session. Our hope would be to offer a follow on session for parents which may provide a space (online) for more interaction, e.g. an online coffee and chat session facilitated by some service providers – more details on this will be provided on the night of the webinar.

We also would want to remind parents and concerned adults of the importance of taking care of themselves – the seat belt or life jacket applies as well when it comes to caring for the emotional wellbeing of others – we need to feel emotionally safe, secure, stable and unafraid ourselves before we can connect with and support others safely and confidently.

Despite our best efforts, we may feel stressed, or overwhelmed with all that is going on. If this is the case, it’s important that we acknowledge how we are feeling, to ourselves and also to someone close to us. If additional help is needed, there are a number of supports and services available – by phone, text, online and in person. More details can be found on the information card attached to this email (CfL Supports & Services Flyer).

Don’t hesitate to reach out – your GP is an important port of call at local level and you can find more details on where to access help here: https://www2.hse.ie/wellbeing/mental-health/get-urgent-help.html

If you, or someone you know needs support, you can find information on www.yourmentalhealth.ie or Freecall Samaritans on 116 123 for a listening ear.

This webinar is an initiative under HSE Connecting for Life Cavan Monaghan and is supported by local partners including Mental Health Ireland, Parenting Monaghan, Pieta House, Cavan County Local Development, Innovation Recovery and Parenting Cavan.
