All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Qualifiers Round 1
Monaghan 1-10 Fermanagh 1-6 9/6/19
Monaghan put their name in the hat for tomorrow’s All-Ireland SFC Qualifiers Round 2 draw after this tense derby win over Fermanagh in Clones on Sunday. A Monaghan team showing four changes from the Ulster quarter-final defeat against Cavan were pushed all the way, but Conor McCarthy’s goal helped finish the game off.
Fermanagh made a strong start with an early goal from Ryan Lyons, but after taking time to find their feet, Monaghan got going in the second quarter. Some well-taken points from distance, including a fine brace from Kieran Hughes and one from Niall Kearns in his first start for the county this year, had Monaghan 0-6 to 1-2 up at half-time and they moved three ahead after the restart. The hosts needed Rory Beggan to make a good save from a Seán Quigley penalty midway through the second half, moments before Fermanagh had Lee Cullen sent off. Monaghan lost Conor McManus to a black card, but although Fermanagh battled back to within a point late on, Hughes turned provider for McCarthy to palm to the net deep into added time. Fermanagh received two very late red cards for James McMahon and Paul McCusker, by which stage Monaghan were assured of a place in Round 2.
