There is a break from senior inter-county action this weekend, but Monaghan’s U-17 and U-16 footballers have fixtures in the next few days.
The minor side continue their defence of the Ulster league Jim McGuigan Cup against Armagh on Saturday at 12 noon in Clones.
Monaghan will be looking to bounce back from a one-point loss to Derry in round one, while Armagh have already played twice; winning against Antrim but losing to Down. Monaghan can call on the likes of Jason Irwin, Karl Gallagher, Shane Hanratty and Liam McDonald from last year’s Ulster-winning panel as they look to get their campaign up and running.
The U-16 Buncrana Cup game, also against Armagh, is now due to be played in Cloghan on Monday night. Monaghan are bidding for a first win after also falling to a one-point defeat against Derry last Saturday, while Armagh lost their opener against Antrim.
On the club scene, there is action in all divisions of the Platinum Tanks Reserve Football Leagues over the weekend.
Sunday’s Division 1A fixtures are Castleblayney v Clontibret; Donaghmoyne v Truagh; and Scotstown v Magheracloone, while in Division 1B, Aughnamullen, Ballybay and Emyvale have home advantage against Monaghan Harps, Latton and Killanny, respectively. In Division 2A, it’s Carrickmacross v Cremartin; Drumhowan v Éire Óg; and Seán McDermotts v Doohamlet.
The Division 2B games are spread over the weekend, with Corduff v Blackhill on Friday; Monaghan Harps v Aghabog on Saturday and Clones v Inniskeen on Sunday. The Division Three games all take place on Saturday, namely Clontibret v Oram; Rockcorry v Scotstown; Seán McDermotts v Castleblayney; and Truagh v Tyholland.
