Bank of Ireland Dr. McKenna Cup Section B
Monaghan 1-14 St. Mary’s University 0-17 6/1/19
Monaghan were held to a draw by St. Mary’s University in their second Dr. Mc Kenna Cup Section B game in Clones on Sunday. Monaghan fielded a team showing nine changes, including a debut for Carrickmacross forward Stephen O’Hanlon. The sides were level four times in a first half that ended at 0-8 apiece and although Monaghan made a bright start to the second half, they were pegged back in the closing stages. The hosts had begun the second period with three unanswered points and when Barry McGinn hit 1-1 in quick succession to take his tally to 1-7 and leave his side four ahead just short of the 50-minute mark, another win looked likely.
St. Mary’s finished strongly, however, to outscore Monaghan by 0-6 to 0-2 in the remaining time. The Belfast students ended with the last three points – two from Shane McGuigan and an added-time equaliser from Aaron Boyle – to claim a share of the spoils. Monaghan will need to win away to Armagh on Wednesday to progress to the Mc Kenna Cup semi-finals.
