MONAGHAN ELECTRICAL INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL LEAGUE FINAL.
Doohamlet 1-10, Donaghmoyne 0-9.
A sharper, slicker Doohamlet clinched the intermediate double when they added the league title to their intermediate football championship, overcoming Donaghmoyne in a very entertaining contest that produced some fine passages of play under the lights of Grattan Park, Inniskeen on Saturday evening last. Doohamlet were full value for their victory in that they were the more purposive team throughout the match, defending well, breaking quickly and with superior support play that saw them keep Donaghmoyne on the back foot for almost the entire game. Doohamlet too dominated the midfield exchanges with Jamie Walsh full of inventive running and the vastly experienced Ciaran McManus keeping everything in that middle third well organised. Donaghmoyne welcomed David Garland back from injury and on the night he was their sole scorer, registering their entire tally of nine points himself and therein lies at least part of the reason that Donaghmoyne’s season which promised much earlier in the year ended on a disappointing note. Doohamlet were never headed in the entire contest with the best Donaghmoyne could manage was being level at a point apiece after four minutes. By half-time Doohamlet had opened a four points lead and they had extended that to five midway through the third quarter, before they struck a decisive blow when Darren Connolly finished off a field length move as he crashed to the Donaghmoyne net to put Doohamlet eight points in front entering the final quarter. Donaghmoyne to their credit did everything they could and they did out-score Doohamlet by five points to one in the final twelve minutes but in truth they never looked like getting the goal they needed if they were to have any chance of turning it around completely.
