Shoe City Senior Football League Final
Truagh 1-14 Carrickmacross 1-11 (AET) 18/11/18
Truagh won their first SFL title since 1975 when they put Carrickmacross away in extra-time of last Sunday’s final in Castleblayney. Long-time league leaders Carrick recovered from conceding a 14th-minute goal to hold a narrow lead for much of this game, but after a late rally forced extra-time, Truagh pushed on, with five substitutes among their total of nine scorers.
Truagh had a series of goal chances during the last ten minutes and while they all went over rather than under the crossbar, the points proved enough for the Gaels to make the breakthrough.
Niall Rooney and youngster Gary Mohan made an impression off the bench for Truagh, who also had good performances from the likes of Christopher McKenna, John McCarron and Aaron and Ryan Mohan. Carrick were very reliant on Stephen O’Hanlon up front and although Mark Downey hit a late goal, it proved to be a mere consolation score for the Emmets.
Long-serving captain Rory Treanor lifted the Owen Ward Cup to kicked off Truagh’s celebrations.
