Allianz National Football League Division One
Monaghan 0-12 Mayo 0-13 28/1/18
Monaghan fell just short in their 2018 Allianz NFL Division One opener against Mayo in Clones on Sunday. The teams were all-square at half-time and the same outcome looked to be on the cards on 70 minutes, until Paddy Durcan kicked a superb added-time winner for Mayo.
A Monaghan team starting with four league debutants – Barry Kerr, Páraic McGuirk, Niall Kearns and David Garland – gave a spirited performance throughout a lively encounter, only to lose out in a frantic finish. Monaghan lost Ryan Wylie on a straight red card, Barry Kerr on a second booking and substitute Dermot Malone to a black card late on and after an appeal for a free at one end for substitute Darren Freeman was ignored, Mayo counter-attacked for Durcan to split the uprights from distance
Monaghan are away to Kildare in Newbridge on Sunday.
