With the Monaghan club championships finished for the year, attention turns to league football.
Each of this weekend’s five County Monaghan Group of Credit Unions Senior Football League games features at least one team with something tangible to play for. Killanny travel to Truagh on Saturday, while Sunday’s fixtures include Magheracloone attempting to bounce back from their county final defeat and secure their senior status when they go to Clontibret. SFC winners Scotstown are away to Castleblayney, with Latton hosting Monaghan Harps and Ballybay taking on Donaghmoyne, who need a win to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation.
Sunday is a big day in the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Football League, particularly for the five teams looking to preserve their second-tier status. Magheracloone is now the venue for the crucial clash of Corduff and Blackhill, while Doohamlet will hope to make home advantage count against Toome. Tyholland host IFC winners Carrickmacross, with Aughnamullen and Cremartin going head to head and already-relegated Emyvale facing a trip to Inniskeen. Defeat for Blackhill would see them return to the junior ranks, but if they can claim a third straight win, it promises to be a nervy afternoon for the teams above them, with the possibility of head-to-head records (where two teams are level on points) or score-difference (involving three or more sides) coming into the equation.
Fourth place is up for grabs in the Eurotech Junior Football League on Saturday. Éire Óg can qualify for the semi-finals if they beat JFC winners Currin, which would see the Smithborough side pip Oram, who are up against Aghabog. The other final-round game set to go ahead is between Drumhowan and Killeevan.
