Maguire Transport Minor Football Championship Division One Final
Killanny 1-19 Carrickmacross 0-13 15/10/17
Killanny won their first ever MFC Division One title when they saw off Carrickmacross in an entertaining final at St. Tiarnach’s Park on Sunday. Carrick led by 0-4 to 0-3 at the end of the opening quarter, but after one of several outstanding saves by Killanny keeper Kian Duffy, a swift counter-attack saw Geraldines captain Dean Connolly fire home what would prove to be the only goal.
Killanny went on to lead by 1-9 to 0-8 at half-time and they maintained their advantage throughout the second half, with Eddie Walsh starring on his way to a tally of nine points, seven of which came after the restart. Carrick had six points from U-16 star Donnach Swinburne, but they could find no way past the inspired Kian Duffy, who claimed the Man-of-the-Match award, while Connolly lifted the Fergal O’Hanlon Cup after a historic win for Killanny.
