Goals Aplenty as Carrick Go Through

By Mary McEneaney Fri 11th Aug

MC ELVANEY’S WASTE & RECYCLING INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Carrickmacross 4-11, Inniskeen 3-9.

Three goal Stephen O’Hanlon helped propel Carrickmacross to their 2nd victory in this year’s intermediate football championship, this time at the expense of Inniskeen in what was overall a fairly low-key and at times scrappy affair in St Mary’s Park Castleblayney on Friday evening. Carrickmacross were the livelier side throughout and looked to have matters wrapped up when they led by 10 points with 7 minutes of normal time remaining but Inniskeen staged a late rally that saw them reduce the deficit to 2 in stoppage time and the game now very much in the balance before O’Hanlon netted his 3rd goal to see Carrickmacross over the line. At the end of a low scoring 1st half Carrickmacross led by 1-4 to 0-4, the goal by Stephen O’Hanlon in the 12th minute. Inniskeen made a promising start to the second-half but O’Hanlon crashed in his 2nd goal in the 3rd minute and they added 5 points without reply to lead by 7 entering the final 10 minutes of normal time. Inniskeen pulled back a point through Michael Monaghan but Carrickmacross responded with 1-1 to open a 10 points lead with 7 minutes remaining but were then put under late pressure as Inniskeen came close to turning things around.
