All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Qualifiers Round 3B
Carlow v Monaghan, Saturday, 7.00, Netwatch Cullen Park
Monaghan will bid to take another step forward in the SFC qualifiers when they make another away trip on Saturday to face Carlow in Round 3B; a first ever championship clash of these counties.
Monaghan got back to winning ways away to Wexford last time out, two weeks after having their Ulster campaign ended by Down. Monaghan had earlier been aiming for a fourth provincial final appearance in five years under Malachy O’Rourke after wins over Fermanagh and Cavan, only to be beaten by the Mourne County at the semi-final stage. Carlow have enjoyed their best summer for many years; beating Wexford in Leinster and putting up a creditable showing against Dublin, before claiming back-to-back qualifier wins over London and Leitrim.
Paul Broderick and Darragh Foley have been prolific this year for Carlow, who are set to welcome influential midfielder Brendan Murphy back from suspension. Seán Murphy, Daniel St Ledger and Ciarán Moran could also play important parts for Turlough O’Brien’s side.
O’Rourke has named an unchanged 26-man panel for Monaghan, who will be looking for big performances from the likes of Conor McManus, Kieran Hughes, Drew and Ryan Wylie, Colin Walshe and Jack McCarron.
Monaghan: Rory Beggan; Fintan Kelly, Drew Wylie, Ryan Wylie; Dessie Mone, Colin Walshe (Capt.), Karl O’Connell; Kieran Hughes, Neil McAdam; Gavin Doogan, Dermot Malone, Shane Carey; Owen Duffy, Jack McCarron, Conor McManus.
Subs: Conor Forde, Kieran Duffy, James Mealiff, Brian Greenan, Vincent Corey, Darren Hughes, Dessie Ward, Ryan McAnespie, Thomas Kerr, Conor McCarthy, Darren Freeman.
