‘Feile’ Peil 2017
First of all a huge thanks to all of those that helped in any way with the arrangements surrounding the clubs participation in Féile Péil 2017 last weekend, especially those who opened their houses to the young footballers travelling from O’Hanrahan’s GAA club Carlow town. The hospitality shown to the visitors was exceptional. Thanks also to the O’Hanrahan’s club for their respect and exceptional behaviour from the young players, even when they beat our team on the Saturday morning! Thanks also to our co-hosts the Aghabog club over the entire weekend and most especially to Ben Clerkin and John Cosgrove who put in a terrific amount of work with the young players. While they didn’t win the tournament they certainly won the ‘best dressed’ category. Having to play 15 a side, on the full size pitch, was a huge challenge but not only did we rise to that challenge we also had relative success and these youngsters thoroughly enjoyed it all and no doubt benefitted from the experience.
We were drawn against O’Hanrahann’s, Sean McDermotts and St Mogues of Fethard, Co Wexford in Group 7B. Our Féile weekend started on Friday afternoon with a game against Sean McDermotts, which Patrick Emmets won on a scoreline of 4 12 to 1 03. This was followed up quickly with a game against eventual Division 7 Cup Winners, St Mogue’s of Wexford. We were just one point down at half time in that game but St Mogue’s pulled away to record a 6 05 to 1 06 win. On Saturday morning we played O’Hanrahan’s and they scored 4 07 to our 0 04. Saturday afternoon we travelled to Denn near Crosskeys, Co Cavan and played a quarter-final against another amalgamation team, Blackwater Gaels (Munterconnaught & Maghera). We played probably our strongest game of the weekend in that and ran out 5 07 to 0 02 winners.
Saturday evening was not completed however and all of our team and the visiting O’Hanrahan’s travelled to Armagh for the Ulster Senior Football Semi Final. While the result was not what would had hoped for, all the lads enjoyed a great evening. Thank’s at this stage are also due to Madden GFC, Co Armagh, which facilitated us with a meal for our players and travelling parties on the way home. It was much appreciated.
We didn’t seem to be home that long when we headed off again on Sunday morning, this time to St Mary’s GFC, (Devenish) near Garrison Co Fermanagh for a semi final against St Mary’s of Leitrim, which was to be out final game of the tournament as we lost out on a score-line of 4 09 to 0 05. O’Hanrahan’s were also to stumble at the semi-final stage and bowed out on Sunday morning too. And so ended a marvellous weekend of all that is good in the GAA.
The next game for the Under 14’s is a Championship semi-final against Clan na Gael at 12 noon on Saturday 8th July in Toome. All support appreciated.
No game for the U16’s this week and the Under 12’s are travelling to Doohamlet for a 12 noon throw in on Saturday.
Training continues as normal for U6’s on Saturday morning. There is a ‘Go Games’ scheduled for Saturday for the Under 8s, details by text.
U 21’s
Patrick Emmett’s will have a championship game against Clan na nGael, possibly at home on Sunday 9th July.
Seniors,
Our senior team played the Sean’s last week in Scotshouse. In a very entertaining game Currin trailed at half time 1-7 to 0-8. In a closely contested second half we could never get in front and a late goal saw the visitors get a deserved win. Final score 2-15 to 0-16. Team and scorers, Fergal Connolly, Colm Mc Caffrey, Conor Mc Caffrey, Enda Mc Caffrey, Dara Brady,0-1, Dick Clerkin,0-1, Shane O Connor, Paddy Mc Dermott,0-1, Ciaran Mc Caffrey,0-2, Jason Mc Kiernan, Ben Clerkin, Kevin Murphy, Niall Mc Entee,0-1, Kieran Kearns, Stephen Smith, 0-10. Subs, Dylan Greenan, Johnny O Connor, Hughie Reilly, Antony Leonard, Damien Connolly.
