Feile 2017
Last weekend will live long in the memory for everyone involved in the John West Feile 2017. From lunchtime on Friday there was special atmosphere around the town as our visiting club Desertmartin GAC of Derry arrived. Over the course of the weekend there was an amazing friendship struck up between our clubs and the memories made which will last for a long time.
For a lot of us this was our first taste of Feile and we could never have imagined what a magnificent and powerful event it could be. Not only for our own lads who played with tremendous heart and dedication throughout the weekend but also to see the fantastic festival of football to which Clones played host. This was all the while played with the greatest sportsmanship you are likely to see.
A tremendous amount of time and effort was put into this event and it is hard to thank everyone who contributed but if you helped out in any way it is greatly appreciated. There are a few people who deserve a special mention. To our host families thank you so much for making this the amazing weekend it was. To Desertmartin GAC’s Players, Parents and Mentors, it was such a pleasure hosting such a magnificent club and we would hope our paths will cross many times into the future. Again so many within our club helped out over the course of the weekend but special mention must be given to the organisers within our own club, the irrepressible Joanne Rehill, James Kierans, Ciaran Mulhall, Colin McCaughey and Adrian Alford. As well as Tommy McCabe for having the grounds in such excellent condition. A massive thank you to all of you.
Finally a club is nothing without its players so the biggest thank you must go to our U-14 team who played some brilliant football all weekend. We are sure that Feile 2017 will have provided many memories that will be brought up for years to come. Well done lads.
U-16’s
Make the long trip to Carrickmacross on Thursday evening for a 7.30pm throw in. Hopefully the lads can get back to winning ways after the break for exams. Best of luck lads.
Junior B’s
Played Monaghan Harps at 3.30 on Sunday in what was a somewhat strange fixture given Feile was taking place in Clones at the same time. The victory was never really in doubt in this one as Clones ran out 6-16 to 1-09 victors. Special mention for Dean O’Connor who scored a very impressive 3-06. This guarantees a semi-final place with only one league game against Rockorry remaining. Well Done Lads.
Junior League
Got back to winning ways last Wednesday as they overcame Eire Og on a scoreline of 1-18 to 1-15. In a nip and tuck first half the crucial score was a goal from Colm Connolly as Clones led at the break on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-09. Eoin McQuaid (3), Adrian Alford (2) and Colm Connolly (3) accounted for the points in the first half. 3 further points by Colm, along with scores from Adrian, Evan and Emmett meant that Clones led by 5 points on 51 minutes and it looked like we would be able to see it out comfortably. However a momentary lapse in concentration was capitalized on by Eire Og and a goal made for a nervy ending. Further points from Fabian, Eoin and Cameron however seen out the victory for Clones. This Fridays Championship game against Eire Og has been cancelled due to Monaghan’s qualifier against Wexford. Next up is a trip to Rockorry on the 7th of July.
Hard Luck
To James, Darren, Fintan and the Monaghan Senior Panel as they lost out to a hungrier Down side at the weekend. It started out as a great day for the club as it was the first time that three men togged out for the county seniors in a long time. Unfortunately it was not to be their day as Down progressed to the Ulster Final. Next up for the lads is the trip to Wexford to take on Banty’s men on the 8th of July.
