Monaghan missed out on qualifying for a third consecutive NHL Division 3A Final when they lost to Tyrone at Cloghan on Sunday. Monaghan had been in pole position to top the group after they won their first four games, but back-to-back defeats saw them miss out behind Tyrone and Donegal on score difference.

Tyrone got off to a flying start, with goals from Casey and Mulgrew leading them to a 2-3 to 0-1 lead. Dónal Meegan and goal-scorer Seán Leonard led a Monaghan rally that closed the gap to three, but a hat-trick of points from Conor Grogan had the visitors in the driving seat at 2-10 to 1-6 at half-time.

Casey and Meegan continued to lead the scoring for either side in the second half, with Monaghan never able to make any real inroads into their deficit. The result was put beyond any doubt ten minutes from time when Mulgrew netted for the second time and Monaghan finished with 13 men after Meegan and substitute Bernard Connor were sent off late on.
