Carrickmacross Club Notes

By Mary McEneaney Wed 22nd Feb

Welcome Home! In June 2012 Derek and Karen Conlon departed Ireland after a number of years in Carrickmacross to resettle in the USA with their family.  Almost seven years later “Big Mattie” has returned for a short visit to the locality he knows so well. We at the Emmets want to welcome him on his vacation and we hope he enjoys meeting his old buddies; no doubt they will reminiscence regarding the company and craic they had around Carrick town when they were school pals. Mattie attends Fordham Preparatory School in Bronx, New York where on the 1st February he signed to play professional football for his college which is a golden opportunity for any young man and a very privilege honour; considering the amount of players involved in the selection process. It is indeed a credit to his ability and we wish him well for the future as we watch with pride his football career unfold! His Conlon background is steeped in Emmet’s tradition with his father Derek the holder of a County Minor Football title and his cousins and uncles adept and proficient Gaelic players so it is no surprise; that he has the skills.

The Club Lotto! The club lotto draw took place this Monday night in the Emmet Centre for a Jackpot of €9,500. The numbers drawn were 11, 16, 24 and 26; there were no matching numbers. Next week’s jackpot is €9,600. Thanks to our lotto co-ordinator Adrian McCloskey who had his team out on Saturday night last! There are three ways of doing the lotto (a) buy weekly (b) subscribe yearly (c) or play on-line via the Emmets website: First out of the “lucky dip” was Lorraine Cassidy €50 “Keep it Local” voucher; Jimbo Connolly and Michael Small got a €20 voucher each; Mary McGinn was also pulled out for a €10 voucher!
Lotto envelopes are available at Birdy’s Newsagents; McMenamin Newsagents; Hughes’s Coffee Shop; McNally’s Tavern; Carrick Deli; Cassidy’s Filling Station (Ardee Road) Bits and Bobs and O’Rourke Fuels:

Money Matters! Could all outstanding monies from the Christmas Swim be returned to any of the committee members as soon as possible or better still go directly to Carrickmacross Credit Union and lodge your returns to the swim account! The final amount will then be divided to the various charities who will receive some well-earned funding on behalf of the Emmets club! Club Membership is long due and if you have not contributed your subscription; you can do so by contacting Andrew O’Sullivan on 087-7977236 or get in touch any member of the Emmets committee who will point you in the right direction! Juvenile Member €20, Adult Member €30 Family Membership €70 (2 adults and any children under 18)

Best Wishes! The Emmets club send our best wishes to our truly respected and valued supporter Brian Hanratty who is presently hospitalised; but we hear he is on the mend which is great news and we hope his recuperation will be swift and speedy! We expect he will be making his evening walks down the Ballybay road as far as Emmet Park in the near future; to support the young and old; as he has done for many years now.

Young Emmets! The under-twelve boys took part in an indoor blitz organised by Monaghan County Committee at the weekend. They played teams from Killanny, Inniskeen, Aughnamullen, Doohamlet and Drumhowan and all the young Emmets played very well and enjoyed themselves in the Pheonix Centre. Players who took part were Max Ward, Evan McNally, Sean O’Brien, Conor Maher, Eoghan Browne, Dion O’Gorman, Gerard Walsh, Cillian Fox, Conall Browne, Odhran Maher, Conor Forde, Jack Donohue and Luke Povall.
