By Mary McEneaney Wed 1st Feb

Emmets Handball! Pride and place goes to Oran Kiernan who captured the Monaghan Minor Championship which was played at Bawn Complex at the weekend; thus he brought back the first cup to the Emmets club for 2017. He defeated Killian Sherry from Tydavnet 21/15 21/05 to take the first trophy of the season! Meanwhile the GAA League continued on Wednesday night but it proved a disappointing night for both of the Emmets teams. The B team of Glenn O’Reilly, Robert Duffy, Frank Duffy and Jimmy Hayes hosted Truagh in the Emmet Centre but went down by five games to three. The A team of  Ronan Kiernan, David McCarthy, Cathal Keenan and Jimmy McCahey travelled to Monaghan to play the Harps but they also were defeated!

Carrickmacross Win! Patrician High-School sensationally knocked St Pats Maghera out of the Danske Bank MacRory Cup Play-off. The final score from the Loop was 2-17 to 3-09. The result was seen as a major upset as the champions exited the 2017 competition in a game of great excitement. St Pats led at half by 2-06 to 1-07 but it is Patrician who qualified for the quarter final spot and good luck to them in their mission ahead.

Emmets Juveniles! “Registration Night” will be held in the Emmet Centre on this Friday night the 3rd of February between 7-30 pm to 9-00 pm. the players from under-six to under-sixteen are requested to attend on the night along with their parents/guardians. All the juvenile cups won in 2016 will be on display for anyone interested in taking family photographs. Light refreshments will be served in the course of the evening. Finally a big thank-you to all the parents who have supported the Emmets club last year and we look forward to further success in 2017. Contact; Pat Egan 086-7721982

Awards Night! The hard work displayed by the Emmets underage players and their coaches came to fruition on Friday night when the club received the “Youth Achievement Award” for 2016 in football at the  Northern Standard sponsored “Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation Night” which was held in the Hillgrove Hotel before a distinguished audience. It was indeed a privileged moment when Youth Officer Andrew O’Sullivan who was also chairman of the Emmets juvenile structures went up to receive the award from John McArdle representing Monaghan County Committee. Of course there was another matter of pride for the club when Aaron Lynch and Nial Loughman stepped up to receive their Ulster Championship (Under 21) medals which they won with the county team last year. Both players represented the club with honour during that successful campaign and they gave the club supporters some wonderful days in what nearly ended with an appearance in the All-Ireland final. The Emmets dinner–table included club chairman Paraic Keenan and also consisted of members from each juvenile age group within the club.

The Club Lotto! The club lotto draw took place on Monday night in the Emmet Centre for a jackpot of €9,200. The numbers drawn were 08, 16, 18 and 26; there were no matching numbers. The “lucky dip” provided Brian Hanratty with €50 while Rachel Hand and Tómas McMahon won €20 each. The €10 went to Aaron Murray. That leaves next week’s jackpot at a whooping €9,300. There are three ways of doing the lotto (a) buy weekly (b) subscribe yearly (c) or play on-line via the Emmets website: Whichever way you play; there is no better way of assisting the club to maintain a high standard of playing facilities and supporting our juvenile structures while providing games and coaching.

Give Blood! A partnership between the Irish Blood Transfusion Service and the GAA to encourage our members and supporters to give blood at local club level is coming to the Nuremore Hotel, Carrickmacross next week on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th February from 4:30 – 8pm. Approximately seventy thousand patients will have transfusions in Irish hospitals this year so please note days and times; Thanks.
