Under-21 Shamrock Cup Round One

Monaghan 1-18 Derry 3-3

Monaghan started the Shamrock Cup with a nine-point win over Derry in Cloghan on Saturday. Derry scored three first-half goals through Francis Kearney (two) and Cormac Quigley to change ends ahead by 3-3 to 0-9, but Monaghan completely dominated the second half, hitting an unanswered 1-9. Dermot Gleeson got the hosts’ goal and they ended up with ten scorers as they cruised past a Derry team who finished with 14 players after Mark McClenaghan limped off and they had already used their only substitute. Both teams were experimental on the day, with the visitors being without their senior panellists involved in that evening’s Dr. McKenna Cup Final. Round two sees Monaghan travel to Darver to play Louth this Friday for a 7.45pm throw-in.
