Dick Clerkin has announced his retirement from the Monaghan team, ending his reign as the longest-serving inter-county footballer. The Currin man made his senior debut for Monaghan in late 1999 and played a record 179 games, during which he scored three goals and 107 points. The midfielder also holds the record for SFC appearances, having lined out in in 54 championship games for Monaghan, with 1-26 to his name. Clerkin, whose father Hugo won Ulster championships in 1979 and 1985, followed in those footsteps by earning prized provincial medals in 2013 and 2015, as well as helping his county win National Football League divisional titles in 2005, 2014 and 2015. He was an Ulster All-Star and a GAA/GPA All-Star nominee in 2010. Monaghan GAA thanks Dick for his service to the county.
