CLUB NOTES
25th October 2016
Highs & Lows!l!
OMG, the highs and lows of club football! I know I don’t speak for everyone but from a personal viewpoint I haven’t been able to eat or sleep properly for the past week. I’m trying to find a good explanation but every time I think about last weekend’s IFC final I experience a horrible unsettling sickening feeling! In many respects, it’s been a strange week, one week you’re competing in an Intermediate championship final battling it out to win a place in the top flight of Monaghan football. The next week you’re in a precarious situation, worrying and waiting anxiously for some results from the final series of league games. Take last Sunday, for example, all eyes were focused on two important clashes that had huge ramifications for us either retaining our intermediate status or being relegated to junior football. Following the results, I guess that queasy feeling I was experiencing will probably last for another week or so now because it is confirmed that we will be playing back in the junior ranks next year. This is obviously a very disappointing time for the club and very heart-breaking for the players to return after just one year and it certainly wasn’t how we had hoped to mark our first year back playing intermediate football. It was an intriguing eague campaign and on occasions the lads produced some solid performances but at times we found the going tough. We were competitive in most games and with a bit more composure or lady luck we could have (or should have) won two or three more games but sadly we left points behind in some crucial matches and regrettably that has come back to haunt us. While we have slipped back down to the junior ranks we have an opportunity to put the record straight. There’s no reason why we can’t regain our place back in the intermediate league. I know all championship or league titles are hard won but personally speaking I definitely believe there’s a lot more to come from this team. I really hope the current group of lads remain together and that there are no whispers of ‘hanging up the boots’. There is plenty of talent, plenty of young lads and it should not be difficult to motivate the ‘ole guys’ or should I say the ‘more experienced campaigners’ to give it a go for another year and bounce back. Roll on 2017!
Thank You
On behalf of the committee I want to acknowledge the efforts and commitment of all our players who wore the Green & White jersey with such pride during the year. Most of you made enormous sacrifices for the cause and it was a magnificent achievement to reach the intermediate championship final. As someone highlighted it is a game of fine margins and small things (like a poor referee) can tilt the scales in a team’s favour on big match days! I also want to pay tribute and sincerely thank our management team of Mickey Morgan, Jimmy McGeough and Pascal Smyth for all their incredible work and dedication over the last 12 months. They all put in a tremendous effort with the players and I thank them for their contributions.
Buncrana Cup
On behalf of the Rockcorry GAA I would like to extend a massive well done to the Monaghan Under 16 Development squad who defeated Derry earlier today (Sunday 23rd October) on a score-line 2-11 to 1-12 to win the Buncrana Cup. The panel features our very own Pauric O’Brien and Ryan Lynch so well done lads it’s a great achievement to wear the county colours and represent your county and all the best.
Happy Halloween
This weekend is the October Bank Holiday weekend and Monday night is going to be very spooky because its’ also Halloween night. We want you all to have a safe and fun night because there will be a lot of little Witches, Ghouls & Ghosts out. Please be careful out there and drive slowly in the built up neighbourhoods and watch out for the trick-or-treaters. For increased safety a good tip is to add a piece of reflective tape to make the costumes more visible for drivers at night time and carry a flashlight. Have a happy, fun and safe Halloween and enjoy all your treats but please do not eat too much junk. On another topic, if you’re going to decorate your house with the traditional pumpkin then I would be delighted to see your creativity. That’s right folks, please share or send me your pumpkin masterpiece creations and I will post the very best of them and let the public vote on the best one! Get creative and start carving!
