THE LATE JOHN (Black John) QUIGLEY.

There was a deep sense of shock and sadness when news of the untimely death of the late Black John Quigley broke on Saturday last following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. With his passing the village of Newbliss, the parish of Killeevan and indeed a much wider area, has lost one of its most colourful characters. John was widely known and respected, and testament to his popularity were the huge crowds that called at his house and attended the removal of his remains with his coffin draped in the blue and white of Killeevan Sarsfields, for his funeral Mass in St Livinus’ Church, Killeevan, on Monday last. Prior to the start of his Requiem Mass symbols of the things in this life that were important to John, his family, farming, his love of reading particularly Irish history and folklore and his lifelong service to the Killeevan Sarsfields football club, an O’Neill’s All Ireland football and a club jersey, were carried to the altar. In his homily the celebrant, Parish Priest Fr. Peter Corrigan, paid tribute to the late John Quigley and spoke in glowing terms of his strong character, his faith, his interest in the community, his love of reading, his trips abroad especially to the USA, and his involvement with the Killeevan club as a player, team mentor, selector and supporter. John Quigley represented Killeevan Sarsfield’s at all levels and made his way onto the senior team in the late 70s when unfortunately the fortunes of the club were in decline following the successful days of the intermediate double of 1974. He represented the club though for over 15 years although the tangible rewards for players at that time were very scarce and his only reward really was a Crawley Cup medal that he won in 1991. As well as playing in the early 80’s John also did stints of voluntary work at the initial development of Sarsfield Park and also showed an aptitude for the small ball game when he played on a Killeevan hurling team in the special Centenary Year (1984) hurling competition that clubs were urged to join. A dedicated community man he was fully supportive of all schemes and plans to provide facilities for the youth of the parish and played his part in fundraising by taking part in two Lord Mayor campaigns in 1984 and 1986, that raised valuable and much-needed funds for the construction of the Acorn Centre. John Quigley was on the Killeevan team that reached the Crawley Cup final in 1993, and he was also on the team that reached the final of the Junior football championship that year only to lose to Corduff and his playing career ended in 1994 when he actually played in goals in a reserve league match against Toome. After his playing days were over John still took an active part in club affairs and acted in the role of team mentor and selector for a number of years and a Testament to his popularity in the club were the large numbers of present and former players, officers, committee members and club members who formed a guard of honour when his remains arrived at Killeevan chapel. John is survived by his wife Celia Marie (nee Thompson), his son Jason, his brothers Eddie, Michael and Paul and his sister Catherine, his three sisters in law and brother in law as well as many nieces and nephews. Following Requiem Mass his remains were interred in the adjoining cemetery where a graveside tribute was paid to him by his cousin and lifelong friend Declan McFarland.
