On Monday 10th of October, Monaghan Coaching and Games organised a 7 aside U13 Super Touch Blitz.
On the night we had 4 groups in total with 20 clubs taking part in the competition. All teams played at least 4 games. After the group stages, the top team in each group qualified for the cup semi-finals, while the runner up in each group qualified for the shield semi-finals.
The Rules for the Super Touch Blitzes are slightly different to what the teams are normally use to, with a different scoring system in operation. All goals are worth 1 point but any point scored outside the 25m scoring zone are worth 3 points. This rule is to encourage long range shooting and there was some terrific 3 point scores taken last night, which was great to see.
After the group stages, Magheracloone, Emyvale, Monaghan Harps and Cremartin qualified for the cup semi-finals, while Donaghmoyne, Castleblayney, Clontibret and Scotstown qualified for the shield semi-finals.
In the cup semi-finals Magheracloone and Emyvale played out a very close game with Magheracloone edging it by the minimum, while Cremartin got the better of Monaghan Harps. In the shield semi-finals Clontibret and Scotstown had a close fought game with Clontibret taking the spoils by 3 points in the end, while Donaghmoyne had a comfortable victory on the scoreline at least against Castleblayney.
The cup final between Cremartin and Magheracloone was a very entertaining game, with some of the score taking particularly from long range a joy to behold. In a very close fought game were the lead changed hands a number of times throughout, a strong finish was always going to go a long way in determining the outcome. Cremartin picked off a number of quick fire scores towards the end with 4 minutes left to give themselves a 3 point lead. Magheracloone to their credit tried to engineer a 3 point opportunity to tie the game but Cremartin’s defence held tight to seal the victory. In the shield final, Donaghmoyne ran out 10 point winners against a very young & skilful Clontibret team.
We would like to thank all 20 clubs that took part in the blitz. Also a big thank you to the 7 referees that officiated at the blitz; Xavier Coyle, Ciaran Mulligan, Barry Grimley, Martin McMahon, Damien Boylan, Anthony Marron & Patrick Duffy.
