MC ELVANEY’S WASTE & RECYCLING INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.
Rockcorry 2-17, Currin 2-8.
Rockcorry staged an increasingly effective second-half performance to book their place in the semi-final of the intermediate football championship at the expense of Currin in this tough, hard-hitting yet always entertaining contest in Smithboro on Sunday afternoon last. After a close opening 10 minutes during which the sides were level twice Currin then took a decisive grip on proceedings with a 2 goal salvo within a minute and a half, which left Rockcorry playing catch up for the remainder of the half, something which they did quite effectively to level the game at half-time with three late unanswered points to leave it 2-3 to 0-9. Rockcorry laid the foundations for victory with a scintillating start to the 2nd half to hit Currin with an unanswered 2-1 in the opening 7 minutes, the 1st goal coming 2 minutes after the resumption and the 2nd 2 minutes later, blows that Currin never effectively recovered from and the nearest they were to get was within 6 points on a couple of occasions for the remainder of the match. Fergal McGeough top scored with 1-7, 2 from frees and one from a ‘45 and his power play on the 40 was a key factor in Rockcorry’s victory while at the back their defence anchored by Conor McGeough, Niall McKeown at full-back and Keith Daly afforded Currin little room or opportunity for scores.
